John Guillaume, was the son of Capt. John Gilliam and Amy Fontaine from England, an indentured servant and French Huguenott, who arrived in Petersburg circa 1635-1640 and married Margery Henshaw of Surrey Co. Virginia and had three children, Hinshaw, John and Elizabeth.

According to Charles Edgar Gilliam, Virginia historian of the Gilliam family, almost all Gilliam's outside Virginia were descended from Hinshaw Gilliam, or his younger brother Charles, sons of John Guiullaume French Huegenot b. 1614, who emigrated to Petersburg, between 1635 and 1642, married Margary Henshaw, daughter of Wm Henshawe of England and Henrico Co. Virginia.
