Notes for Mary Elizabeth Britt: Mary Elizabeth Britt was born in Wake Co. North Carolina where her parents, Elisha D. Britt and Elizabeth Jones had married. As a small child in the mid to late 1820's she moved with her family to Monroe Co. Georgia. Mary Britt, at age 19, married the boy next door- Phillip Thurman Heidle 29, son of John Heidle, who had moved his family about 1824 from Edgefield County, South Carolina, to Monroe County, Georgia.
Mary Britt Heidle was widowed after 17 years of marriage, leaving her with nine children, the youngest, Emma, only five months old. Her husband Phillip T. Heidle died August 29, 1862 in the battle known as Second Manassas in Virginia. Her brother-in-law, Dionicious Heidle, known as "Di", had died of a sickness on April 16, 1861 at Goldsboro, North Carolina. Mary's youngest brother, John T. Britt, in poor health in his early twenties- but a well known shoemaker who made shoes and leather goods for the Confederacy, traveled from Georgia to bring home for burial the remains Mary's husband Phillip and his brother Dionicious Hidle. The brothers were said to be buried side-by-side near Jug Town, Upson County, Georgia or in Pike County.
Mary Heidle applied for and received a widows pension for her husbands service to the Confederacy in Monroe and Upson Counties in Georgia, until her death in 1899. Mary never remarried.
