Mary Goforth (daughter of John Lewis Goforth and Mary) was born October 01, 1784 in Knoxville, Greene Co. Tennessee, and died December 13, 1825 in Belleview, Washington Co. Missouri.

Mary Goforth's father, John Lewis Goforth, was a Whig in the Revolutionary War and lived in Rutherford Co., North Carolina from 1790-1793. In 1793 John Lewis Goforth traveled from Rutherford County, North Carolina to Kent Co., Delaware to try to recover his fathers share of his brothers estate, but the long trip ruined his health, left him penniless, and he died three years later leaving six children. Mary and her siblings were bound out. Court records mention Mary Goforth as follows:

The Jurors present and say that the orphans of John Goforth, decd., in number, four boys and two girls, are in desolate distressing condition- It is therefore ordered that a notice issue to the widow mother of said orphans to appear and shew (sic) cause why the said boys should not be bound to trade and the females suitable employments until they arrive at full age. Issued.

Whereas the orphans of John Goforth, decd., are in a suffering and distressed condition both for food and phisic the Court have agreed with Doctor Holt to visit said children and direct them to the use of means for which he is to be allowed out of the County Tax and that Benjamin Crow and Samuel Gragg do carry this order into effect.

Ordered that Mary Goforth be bound unto Jesse Lynch until she attain to the age of 18 years to learn to read etc., said orphan now of the age of eleven years past the first day of October last. 8 s pd or 1 Doll.

Agreeable to an order of last Term - the Court allows Doctor Holt the sum of 20 D 75 C for medicine, boarding etc. furnished to the orphans of John Goforth, decd., and that he be paid the same out of the County Tax. Issued to George Conway.

May Term 1797 Greenville, Greene County, Tennessee Court Records

May 8, 1797
Ordered that a citation issue against Jesse Lynch to appear at our next Court and shew (sic) cause why Mary Goforth an orphan formerly bound to Jesse Lynch should not be taken from the said Jesse, and bound to some other person - it appearing to the Court on the testimony of E. Baker, Esq. that the said orphan is abused. The above order is rescinded.

May 9, 1797
Ordered that Mary Goforth be bound unto Doctor William Holt until she shall attain to the age of eighteen years to learn the Miliner Art. Said orphan now of the age of thirteen years. 1 Doll remitted.
