| I am reasearching the HOLMES family. The farthest I have gotten is John W. Holmes, born about 1821 in Georgia(?). He married Harriet C. Murphy, born September 13, 1823, about 1850. They were among the first settlers of Towns County, Georgia and John was the first ordinary of Towns County. John was a Captain in the 65th regiment, Infantry, Georgia for the Conferderate Army. John died July 20, 1883 and Harriet died November 23, 1876. They are both buried in Macedonia Cemetery, east of Hiawassee, GA. John and Harriet had three children: (1)Samuel Augustus(November 23, 1852) married Emily H. Beach(August 21, 1854), daughter of Isaac Thomas and Elvira Beach of Cherokee County, N.C. (2)Americus "Pink" born about 1854, married Dr. W. H. McClure on August 24, 1876. (3)John Wiliam born June 6, 1863, married to Martha Burch(July 31, 1863) on November 26, 1882. After Martha's death, he married Ellie Stroud Wilson. I am having trouble finding parents for John W. Holmes. Any information would be appreciated. As indicated above, I am not convinced he was born in Georgia. In the 1860 Towns County Census, his place of birth is listed as S.C. But the 1850 census of Union County, Georgia has listed Georgia as his place of birth. I suspect his parents might be from Georgia, North Carolina, or South Carolina. I am also researching the MAYHEW family from Maryland. I am relatively new to geneology, so any helpful hints or information would be appreciated. Thank you. |
