Notes for Ethel Amelia Cale:
This following is courtesy of Sue Jennings of Llanelli:
Ethel Amelia was the oldest of the Cale sisters. She married Patrick McCarthy at the age of 22 - and he was 28. They married on 20th November 1920 in St Mary's Church, Lloyd Street, Llanelli. (The church and St Mary's School were built in 1858 but knocked down in the late 1930s/early 40s when the new church Our Lady Queen of Peace was built in Waunarlwydd on land believed to be donated by the Stepney Howard family. St Mary's school moved to Goring Road but has now relocated to Harvard Road next to the R C Comprehensive School - St John Lloyd's).No profession was noted on the Marriage Certificate for Ethel but Patrick was noted as a Labourer at the Electric Car Depot. His address at the time was 3 West End, Llanelly and Ethel's was 117 Lower Ann Street. The marriage was performed by Fr E R Carew.
My dad remembers the night before his mum died that she asked for him. He remembers candles being lit and being woken up to be taken to her.He would have been almost 4 years old. He remembers the colour of her skin as being very yellow because she worked with the chemicals in the munitions factory. Ethel died at the age of 35 of cancer.
