John Black was born May 25, 1737 in Marsh Creek, PA, and died March 29, 1809 in Mecklenburg Co., NC. He married (1) Mary Walker. He married (2) Margaret Hamilton on April 15, 1762 in Mecklenburg Co., NC, daughter of John Hamilton and Rosanna Cumins.

Tombstone Inscription--"In memory of John Black who died March 29th 1809. Aged 72 years-And he being built on this foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone".

A plaque has been added "Founder" as he founded Sardis ARP Church.

John Black lived on McAlpine Creek. He fought in the Revolutionary War as a Lieuteant of Horse under Col. William Hill of SC. He was captured by the British & kept on the prison ship Torbay in Charleston SC harbor, then released. Tradition has it that he rescued a family from a burning house on the way home. After the Revolution, he was one of the founders of Sardis Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, breaking away from Providence Presbyterian Church when they began to sing hymns instead of Psalms.

Mary Walker is buried at Sardis A.R.P. Church, Mecklenburg Co., NC.
