Tombstone Inscription--"To the memory of Margaret McAuley who departed this life January 21st 1844 Aged 72 years".
Margaret's father,John Black,lived on McAlpine Creek. He fought in the Revolutionary War as a lieutenant of horse under Col. William Hill of SC. He was captured by the British and kept on the prison ship Torbay in Charleston (SC) harbor,then was released. Tradition has it that he resecued a family from a burning house on his way home. After the revolution, he was one of the founders of Sardis Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church,breaking away from Providence Presbyterian Church when they began to sing hymns instead of psalms.
