Emily was educated in Altus, Arkansas and moved with her parents to Shawnee, Oklahoma where she met Elmer Adolphus Nicholas. For many years she was employed at Halliburton's Department Store in downtown Oklahoma City where she became Head of their Alterations Department. She adopted her nephew, Jesse Polk O'Gwin after the death of his mother, Geneva Dowdy. After retirement she moved to Ponca City where she lived with her daughter "Dort". Among the casket bearers at her funeral were her grandsons, Don and Randall Smith, great-grandson Carey Smith, and Joel Kaufman, a nephew by marriage.

LMER ADOLPHUS NICHOLAS:

Elmer enlisted as a Private in Co. F., 42nd U. S. Volunteer Infantry at Howell, Michigan. The 42nd participated in the Philippine Insurrection from November 30, 1899 to June 21, 1901. In 1898 the U. S. Battleship Maine was blown up at Havana. The U. S. blockaded Cuba to aid independence forces and Spain declared war. the Spanish fleet was destroyed in the Philippines and Spain agreed to cede the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam. Filipino insurgents, unable to get recognition of independence from the U. S., started guerrilla war. Elmer was in the expedition from La Loma to Santa Cruz, and skirmishes at San Antonio and other islands. His service was characterized by his commanding officer as "honest and faithful", but he would be plagued the rest of his life by health problems resulting from his service. He was honorably discharged July 26, 1901 at the Presidio in San Francisco, California. He was given a pension and entered the Veterans Hospital at Temple, Texas in 1942.
