Notes for M
ICHAEL MCAVOY:
Michael served two enlistments in the Federal Army during the Civil War.
First he joined the Co. A, 125 Pa. V.I., Aug 7, 1862 at the age of 17, being enrolled at Tyrone, Pa. He saw hard service by the fact that he took part in the following battles: Second Bull Run, South Mountian, Antietam, Opequant Creek, Chancellorsville, Front Royal, Leetown, three times at Winchester, Cedar Creek, Mt. Jackson, Fisher's Hill, Stanton, Monacacy Junction and at Lynchburg and Hunter's Raid. Some of these battles were the bloodiest in the Civil War. At Fairfax Court House in the fall of 1862 he acted as Orderly for Gen. Thomas L. Kane for about two months. His first term of service ended in May of 1863, and he was Honerably discharged at Harrisburgh, Pa. He enlisted again at Tyrone, Pa. Feb. 24, 1864 in the 22 Pa. Cav. In June the 3rd. Pa Provisional Cav. at New Creek, W. Va. His final discharge came at Cumberland, Maryland November 1865

After the war Michael married Caroline Sherry and lived in Kane, Pa. There he joined the Church of St. Callistus. He donated a stained glass window to the church. He and his wife Caroline and several children are buried in the family plot in the Church's Cemetery. He worked as a forman on the Railroad at Kane.

Michael also served as an officer in the GAR Post 238, Biddle. He was the post commander at one time.
According to th History of McKean County on January 11, 1889 a fire destroyed several business, one of them belonging to the McEvoy Bros. This is the first refference to any other McAvoy's in McKean County, all though it does explain what I thought were double entries in the 1900 census for William McAvoy. It could be after this fire that Michael went to work for the RailRoad.

I never knew anything about my great grandfather. My father did not know him, so he never talked about him. He must have been a hard man, and very principiled. To have lived through a war that saw so much bloodshed, and horror, then to treat a child as he had done with my grandfather. It kind of makes you wonder how he could do this. And Caroline, to lose a child by disowning him. They must have been very strong in their beliefs. I guess it runs in the famiy. Because, I can see some of these traits in my brothers and sisters. We are all bull headed, and we thought that it came from the Ensell side.
