Descendants of Father '1st Gen' McBrayer

7. WILLIAM3 MCBRAYER (WILLIAM2, FATHER '1ST GEN'1) was born Abt. 1734 in Northern Ireland ?, and died Bet. 1805 - 1812 in York Co., SC. He married MARTHA ?. She was born Abt. 1735, and died Abt. 1805 in York Co., SC.

Notes for W
ILLIAM MCBRAYER:
He was raised on the family's "Williamsburg" farm on the confluence of Back Creek and the Conococheague River in Franklin Co., PA.
During the mid 1760s William, in the company of his younger brother, Samuel and his family, left his home and the familiar surroundings of PA and migrated to the south, settling on the Broad River on the line between North and South Carolina. Wayland F. Dunaway's book "The Scotch Irish of Colonial Pennsylvania" is described as the most autoritative and most readable history of the Scotch-Irish of colonial Pennsylvania. It traces the important migratory movements of the Scotch-Irish from the province ot Ulster in Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania, then from Pennsylvania down the foothills of the Appalachians through the great Valley of Virginia to the Carolinas and Georgia.
(Some researchers in the past have stated that William and Samuel did not journey to the Carolinas until the 1780s. Land grants located in the records in North Carolina verifies the fact that he was here by AT LEAST 1767. Samuel had land surveyed in 1767 with statements of "improvements he now lives" indicating he had had sufficient time to possibly build his house, etc.)
William's first land holding in this new area was entered on 5 Dec 1767. This 50 acres was located on the "watry branch of Turkey Creek in Tryon County, North Carolina" and the patent was issued by WILLIAM TRYON, then Governor of the Province of North Carolina, on 4 May 1769. A later survey found this land to be in the Cravens District of York Co., SC, and a patent was issued to Wm and Martha by Gov Wm Bull of the Provence of South Carolina on 17 May 1774 (Bk B, p 16, #5, Land Grants and Deeds, York Co., SC). (NOTE: Tryon County was formed in 1768 from Mecklenburg County, but the formation did not actually take effect until April 1769. The border line between North and South Carolina was extended beyond the Catawba River until 4 Jun 1772. Prior to that survey, Tryon County's southern boundary was left open. The western boundary was established by the Indian boundary of 1767, running from White Oak Mountain in present Polk Co., NC, to a point on the Reedy River, on the present Laurens Co., NC - Greenville Co., SC, line. The eastern boundary was the Catawba River.
Therefore, until the survey of June 4, 1772, Tryon County included all or part of the present SC counties of Greenville, Laurens, Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, York, and Chester. North and South Carolina had both been granting land in this area since about 1752. - NC Land Grants in South Carolina, Vol 1, Tryon County 1768-1773)
He had another 150 acres on Turkey Creek surveyed on 27 Dec 1772 (Cravens Co., SC). This grant was issued 17 May 1774.
William sold some land on the "North side of Broad River in Camden Dist." on 30 Sep 1779, and on 9 Oct 1783 sold the 150 acres he had been granted in May 1774 to "JAS BROWN". He bought an additional 125 acres on the Main Broad River on 1 Feb 1786 , and sold 300 acres on the east side of Buffalo Creek on the same day. According to the deed (300 acres) this was the land on which he was living at the time (Camden Dist, York Co., SC). He was granted additional land and continued to sell and buy until 1804. The last recorded deed located for William was dated 1 Feb 1804 in which "Wm McBrayer of York Co., SC., sold to WILLIAM BRIDGES of Rutherford Co., NC, 100 acres on Certains Mill Creek, known as Long Branch for a sum of $225.00". According to this deed he still retained land on the East side of the Main Broad River (possibly in Rutherford Co., NC).
There is reportedly a will of William, but its location has not been determined nor are the contents known.
Some researchers have confused this William with the one which was located in Rutherford County, NC, about the same period. The 'NC' William was the son of Samuel (2nd gen) and was the nephew to the SC William.
The first census report of SC shows a William McBrair in the Camden District of York County as having two sons over 16 years of age, one son under 16 and two daughters, as well as himself and his wife. The 1800 census of York Co., SC, shows William and his wife as both being over 45 and no children are listed.
It isn't known when or where William married, nor his wife's, MARTHA, maiden name. Of his sons and daughters only one son and one daughter have been definitely linked with the family. David, which is named as a witness in several of the land transactions of his father, married Delila Webb, and a lineage on this family is known. It is possible that William had another son named William, as several land deeds list the father as "William Senior", but no further information has been located to verify this assumption. One daughter, Margaret, married Reuben Hill in Rutherford Co. (see lineage below). Nothing is known of the other sons or the other daughter.
He is buried in York Co., SC.

      1. Deed bk A, pp 211-214, bought from Anthony Morgan and wife Mary Morgan of Camden Dist (dte of 22 Feb 1786 ?) land granted 6 Dec 1769 to Edward Dickson: witt: Joseph Camp, John Morgan, Marget Morgan. Ltr from Kirby Watkins.
      2. William's death - 1812: Bulletin of Genealogical Society of Old Tryon Co., (NC), Vol. 2, 1974, start p. 153 (information provided by Charles Hite, Gastonia, NC, Oct 1995.) Buffalo Baptist Church, Cherokee, SC (on Buffalo Creek of Broad River just inside SC, today Cherokee Co., SC)

In addition Kirby has sent data indicating William did not die in 1805, as had been previously shown, but, instead, in 1812. In fact a statement shows that "William McBrayer and wife, Martha, came to Sandy Run in 1809 as William was moderator". William and Martha were members of the Concord Baptist Church near Bostic, NC, in 1809. Records from both the Concord Church and the Sandy Run Church give the 1812 year as the date of death for William.
Kirby, through many descriptions, has placed the Buffalo Baptist Church location 'as one half mile south of the NC-SC state line on Buffalo Creek.'
Other facts leading to the above assumption of his death in 1812, as provided by Kirby, are found in Will Book B, page 223, Rutherford Co, NC, 8 Jan 1808, where William McBrayer was a witness for the will of DAVID MCDOW who lived just south of the present- day Bostic, NC.
