60. ESTHER CALDWELL4 REID (ESTHER3 MCBRAYER, DAVID2, FATHER '1ST GEN'1) was born January 01, 1780 in Antrim Twp, Franklin, Pennsylvania55, and died January 18, 1854 in Lower Burrell, PA. She married WILLIAM ROSS February 20, 1803 in Franklin, Pennsylvania, son of SAMUEL ROSS. He was born November 25, 1762 in Balteagh Parish, Londonderry, Ireland, and died August 28, 1849 in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.

--"Revolutionary Ancestors," by Dr. Reid W. Stewart--Esther settled in what is now Lower Burrell, PA. Esther had three sons and five daughters. The Rosses are buried on their farm. They were members of Puckety Associate reformed (now United Presbyterian) Church of which William Ross was and original elder.

She was named Ester in father's and mother's will. Birthplace assumed.

ILLIAM ROSS:
They settled in what is now Lower Burrell, PA. The Rosses were members of the Puckety Associate Reformed (now United Presbyterian) Church of whichWilliam Ross was an original elder.

William worked as a surveyor in his early years, learning this work in Greencastle, PA. He was one of the six original ruling elders of Puckety Associate Reformed (later United Presbyterian) Church in Lower Burrell, PA. The congregation met on the Ross farm and after 1806 used a barn built that year. About 1815 the site of the meeting place of the congregation was moved to the site of old Puckety Cemetery.

(from Dan Cook 1999) " William first came to America 10 Jul, 1783, served briefly with the American forces in the Revolution, and settle in Greencastle, Franklin Co., PA, in 1788. He was appointed by the governor of PA to survey the western Pennsylvania counties of Butler, Crawford and Venango. He periodically took refuge in Fort Pitt (Pitsburg) from Indian attacks. Many court records refer to the "Ross Survey". In October of 1791, he visited Ireland to settle his father's estate. He returned to America on Aug 26, 1793 with his younger brother Samuel Ross, and the next year migrated to the area that is Lower Burrell, PA, purchased 2000 acres, and called the estate, "Rossdale". It runs along the Allegheny River in Westmoreland Co. He was buried on his estate in Lower Burrell, PA."

--"American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin Co., PA," 1969 --William served as a private under Capt. Thos. Johnston, 1780, under Capt. Patrick Jack, 1781. Willam Ross is said to have studied surveying under a Mr. Rankin at Greencastle. They moved to Westmoreland Co., PA. Gives marriage date as 1 Jan 1780.

He was buried on his estate in Lower Burrell, PA.

--1842-- Was graduated from Union College, Schnectady, NY, and read law in Greensurg, PA, and was admitted to the Bar November, 1842;
--1847-- Andrew served in the Mexican War, 2nd Lieut. 11th Inf. died on shipboard on his way home. (Penna. Archives, 5th Ser. Vol. 6, p. 84, 291, 295)
--1847-- enlisted in the Westmoreland Guard; this group became Co. E, 2nd Reg. of PA Volunteers in the Mexican War. The Co. was engaged in the battles of Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Cherubusco, Molino Del Rey, Chapultepec, and Mexico City. Andrew died of fever on shipboard on the way home and was buried in the Gulf of Mexico. Of 94 mustered in the Co., only 44 were mustered out 14 Jul 1848;

61. MARY 'POLLY'4 REID (ESTHER3 MCBRAYER, DAVID2, FATHER '1ST GEN'1) was born 1782 in Antrim Twp, Franklin, Pennsylvania, and died November 22, 1843. She married WILLIAM STEWART, JR. December 07, 1805 in Franklin, Pennsylvania, son of WILLIAM STEWART and ELIZABETH LEEPER. He was born 1781, and died 1850.

She was married by date of father's will, 11 Jan 1819;

Mary's long obituary appeared in "The Preacher", an Associate Reformed magazine published in Pittsburgh, PA; It is said she had patiently borne a long illness, d at age 61 years.

Buried in the Puckety Associate Reformed (now United Presbyterian) Church Cemetery;

Name from father Andrew Reid's will. Birthplace assumed.

(from Dan Cook 1999) "William and his brother John migrated to western PA in 1804 from Cumberland Co., PA to clear land and settle on a farm which their father purchased the previous year. The farm was located on land now within the corporate limits of New Kensington. It is now where the East Kinsington Community Building stands. After clearing some of the farm land, William Stewart returned to the Cumberland Valley in 1805 to marry the girl he had left behind. She was Mary Reid. He brought her to live in a cabin he built on the land. According to the Howe Family Genealogy, Will Stewart's family became allied with the Howes."

He "settled in what is now New Kensington, PA; "Both (William and John) were founding elders of Puckety Associate Reformed (later United Presbyterian) Church in Lower Burrell, PA;

--1804-- "William settled with his brother John in Westmoreland Co., PA, on a farm purchased by their parents in 1803 in what is now New Kensington, PA;

--1845-- William moved to Tarentum, PA., where he died;

William had a large family who included a school teacher, school principal, physician, lawyer, and businessman. William was on of six founding elders of Puckey Associate Reformed (now United Presbyterian) Church, Lower Burrell, PA.

He was buried in the Puckety Associate Reformed (now United Presbyterian) Church cemetery,

It was said the Stewarts lived across Warm Spring Road, Hamilton Twp, Franklin Co., PA, from William McBrayer.

William Stewart, Jr. moved his family to Westmoreland Co., PA.

  Notes for ANDREW REID STEWART:
According to the 'Howe Family Genealogy" from Andrew Stewart sprang a five-generation line of ruling elders of the neighborhood Puckety Presbyterian Church. The family is still assoviated with the Puckety church after more than 180 years. Seven descendents of Andrew also became ordained Presbyterian ministers.

About 1829, Andrew and his brother, John, settled on the "Point Pleasant" farm, which later was to become part of the town of Lower Burrell.
