Notes for ANDREW JOHNSON MCBRAYER: There is no definite issue of record for Andrew and Elizabeth. They were living in Franklin Co. in 1880 as shown by the census. Andrew enlisted in the Confederate Army in May 1861 at Duck Springs, AL., as a private in Co. 'I', 10th Alabama Infantry, Wilcox's Brigade, A.P. Hill's Corps, Anderson Division (from: "Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray 1861-1865", by Mamie Yearly, O.S., p 487). He was wounded in the battle of Williamsburg on the 5th of May, 1862, and was taken prisoner. He was held captive at Fortress Monroe and from there was sent to Ft. Delaware. He was eventually exchanged and returned to his home in Alabama to recuperate. It was possibly while he was convalescing that he met and married Mary. After his wounds had healed he returned to his unit to fight with the 'boys in gray' in battles at Drainsville, Gettysburg, and Culpepper Court House. He served until the end of the war and was with General Lee at the surrender at Appomatax. "Comrade McBrayer was a member of Ben McCulloch Camp, No. 300, U.C.V., and was a good citizen, and was truly a Christian". (Am. Pub. Co., Vol 19, Vet., p 243.) Andrew McBrayer died at his home near Satillo, Franklin Co., TX, on 5 Jan 1910 and is buried in Franklin Co. Elizabeth filed a Widow's Application for a pension on 24 Aug 1916 in Texas. The pension was eventually approved on 11 Oct 1916 - Pension #33403 - Issue in Franklin Co. Within the records of this file, supplied by Charlene McBrayer Manley, was much historical data relating to Andrew's military record and service. One of his army comrades wrote: "We each (F.M. Sauls and J.D. Land) served in the army with A.J. McBrayer... and know that he made a good and faithful soldier and never deserted the cause. He was wounded in the war, and I, J.D. Land, helped dress his wounds. He made a brave and true soldier." Another C.S.A. soldier, D.M. Reeves, wrote: "...I can't remember just now what fight he was woned, but he was in Co. I, 10 Alabama. I don't think he come back to the compny after he was woned for he was near blind with sore eyes. He had a miney hole in his hip when he died. I was with wagon train part of the time. I new A.J. McBrayer long before the war." J.D. Land wrote: "I... new A.J. McBrayer from childhood ...come home bad wounded. After he come home he taken sore eyes and went nearly blind. He never could see much afterwards. I don't no where he was when he was wounded. "He had 2 brothers shot and killed the same day..." (ed. note: The two brothers referred to here were probably James W. and Samuel F.) |
