Notes for W
ILLIAM MCBRAYER:
Very little is known of this son. It is rumored that he possibly moved to California at a very early age. Evidently nothing has ever been heard of him since.

New information indicates he may have moved for a time to South Carolina where a William McBryar was listed in 1840.

      William McBryar , e.d. 253.....
      White males...1 (between 20-30)
      White females...1 under 5 -

We do know he was living in California on 22 Nov 1859. (see will of brother James F.)

William would have been born between 1810-1820; his wife would have been born between 1810-1820; the daughter would have been born between 1835-1840, making their date of marriage between 1835-1839.

Notes for S
AMUEL BUNCOMBE MCBRAYER:
He was about 19 years of age when he moved with his parents to AL, where they settled near Springville in St. Clair County.

Considerable confusion existed in his community in distinguishing Sam from his cousin, also named Sam. Something had to be done... so the friends and neighbors of the two Sams gave them nicknames. For Samuel B., being a Justice of the Peace and an upholder of the law, he was dubbed "Honest Sam" or "Bunc", while his cousin, who was known for the dogs he raised, kept, and hunted, was tabbed "Dog Sam".

Samuel B. was a Justice of the Peace in St. Clair Co. for a number of years (was serving as acting J.P. on 30 Sep 1851, pg 264, Ashville, St. Clair Co., AL, records - bk was not numbered). He was credited with performing many marriage ceremonies for the McBrayers of the area.

He was also an early-day Mason, having entered Springville Lodge #280 on 3 Jun 1864.

He died at the home of his daughter, Maggie, in Ashville, St. Clair Co. Both he and Susan, who died in 1904 (She was listed in 1900 census), are buried near the gate of the Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, St. Clair Co., AL.

Anita McCray states: "... Cherish, The St. Clair County Historical Society publication ran excerpts from a series called "Our Old People" which ran in the St. Clair County Aegis and featured Sam McB...confirmed Sam's birth date and that he was the father of 5 sons and 7 daughters.
