He married FRANCES PRISCILLA 'FRANKIE' HARRILL March 10, 1831 in Rutherford Co., NC, daughter of SAMUEL HARRILL and SUSANNAH HAMRICK. She was born June 10, 1815, and died January 23, 1911 in Cleveland Co., NC.

They built their home less than a quarter of a mile from the old David and Delilah McBrayer home place. David, his wife, Martha A., were still living on Sandy Run, Cleveland Co., NC in 1920. Their son, John A. and his family were in the same house hold. (1920 census, pg 4A, ED 64, dtd 6/7 Jan 1920):

He is buried in the old McBrayer Cemetery, #7 Township, Cleveland Co., NC.

"During the Civil War, while still in his teens, he enlisted and served in the 9th Regiment, Company I, First North Carolina Calvary. At the end of the war, he walked from Lincolnton to his Mooresboro home. During the Reconstruction period, federal troops leaving Shelby, camped in the woods just opposite and north of the McBrayer house. David and his brothers took the livestock up Sandy Run Creek to a swamp to hide them from the troops who were stealing cattle, horses and other personal property." (internet information - Jul 2003)

Robert enlisted on 27 May 1864, at the age of 17, as a 3rd Sgt. in Company C, 71st Reg't, NC Militia, and served during the remainder of the Civil War.

On 7 Feb 1885 he and Mary (E. ?) "of Cleveland Co., NC, sold to D.D. SUTTLE of the same place, 4 3/4 acres of land for $150.00". (Bk "T", p 349, Cleveland Co. Records)

Robert, a Mason, as indicated on his tombstone, died 28 Feb 1912 in NC. Amanda died 1 Feb 1929. Both are buried in the Shelby City Cem., NC.
