Notes for DR. JOHN HARRILL MCBRAYER: "...His father died when he was only 7 or 8 years of age, leaving his mother a widow with several children to care for, and in very poor circumstances. He was very ambitious and would lie on the hearth at night, and read by the light of a pine knot." *"Translations - The Medical Society of the State of North Carolina - 1905". He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Rutherford Co. on 20 Jul 1864 as a private in Company B, 70th Reg't, NC Troops. "...he ran away and enlisted. He had only been there a few months when his mother had him brought home; not being satisfied, he ran away again and re-enlisted. During the time he was in the war he waited on the sick and wounded in the hospital. This created the desire to become a physician." "In spite of the fact that he was poor he determined to get an education. He entered Rutherford College, paying his expenses by selling clocks and books during his leisure hours and by teaching during vacation. After remaining there for a while, he returned to Rutherford College, where he graduated in 1873." After his graduation from Rutherford College, "He studied medicine under Dr. T.E. McBrayer of Shelby, NC, whose father kept a hotel. He was employed as (a) clerk in this hotel, and thus earned enough money to take a course of lectures in Baltimore." *ibid He set up his first practice in Nicholsonville, NC, in 1876, where he built a fairly large practice. He later moved his profession to Boiling Springs, but, unsatisfied with his training, he entered the Atlanta Medical College in 1881, and graduated in 1882. In 1886 he moved his practice to Shelby, Cleveland Co., NC. He also had a pharmacy in connection with his practice. Soon after "moving to Shelby, he was ap-pointed U.S. Commissioner, which position he held for eight years." He was named postmaster of the Shelby P.O. in 1898; he remained as such for over four years. He was a Mason, Red Man, and a member of the Methodist Church of Cleveland Co. He also served as Chairman of the Cleveland County Republican Party, during which time the county went Republican for the first time in history. His health began to fail him in 1902 and in 1903 he retired to his farm in #1 Township, Cleveland Co., where he died 30 Jan 1905. He was "buried at Camp's Creek Church Cemetery with full Red Man and Masonic honors". |
