Notes for John Calvert:

Immigration of the Irish Quakers into Pennsylvania
Of Chester County, Pa., and New Castle County, Delaware. Established in 1686.

John Calvert,2 son of Thomas Calvert, of Drumgor, Parish of Segoe, County Armagh, Ireland, and Jane, his wife, was born 8 Mo. 6, 1648, in Stranmillis, near Belfast; was married 3 Mo. (May), 29, 1673, at the house of Roger Webb, to Judith Stamper, daughter of Hugh Stamper and Bridget, his wife, of Lurgan, County Armagh. Judith Stamper was born 3 Mo. 12, 1652, at "bowlton wood,"3 County Cumberland, England.

John Calvert removed with his family about 1683 to Pennsylvania, and settled in Upper Providence Township, now Delaware County, where he owned 300 acres of land, granted to him by William Penn, 1 Mo. 13, 1683. An adjoining tract of 300 acres was also granted at the same time for Thomas Calvert, the father, who probably did not come to this country. Still another tract of 100 acres, contiguous to the above, was granted on the same date to Margaret Calvert, probably the daughter of Thomas. On 2 [p.318] Mo. 11, 1691, it was ordered that a patent for the whole tract should be made to John Calvert, to whom it was made appear to belong.1 At Chester Monthly Meeting, 4 Mo. 6, 1687, mention is made of a difference between John Calvert and Thomas Hollingsworth (stepson of John Calvert's sister Ann, who married Valentine Hollingsworth) about dividing their lands in Upper Providence.

  Notes for Mary Calvert:

The HISTORY OF THE CHENOWETH FAMILY by Hiatt in 1925 suggest that Mary was the dau of Charles, II , Lord Baltimore and his third wife Mary

Mr. Buckey of Ohio in his 1992 book on the Calverts has found this family that has been placed as her parents with a ? mark. The dates seem to be of the correct time period and he has found some connections between the this Calvert family and the Chenoweth family including some family names. He found a marriage for John and Mary in St. Ann's church in Burlington, NJ. He states in his book that there is bapt. records for some of the children including William (1718). However in the book of Genealogy Miscellancy NY & NJ by Stillwell I found the Bapt. listed in the list for 1904/05 year. This would make this William older than the first child that has been found to be born about 1706. Was their first child William who died?

Mary did name one of her girls Ruth. And Mr. Buckey thinks Ruth Calvert who married William the first son of John and Mary (Smith) Chenoweth was a grandaughter of one of Mary Calverts brothers.

  Notes for John Chenowith:

According to J Richard Buckey: John, the progenitor of the Chenoweth Family in America, is thought to have immigrated from Wales sometime before 1704. He married Mary Calvert, the daughter of John Calvert and Judith Stamper, about 1705, probably in the home of one of her relatives in Pennsylvania. Family Tradition places the marriage in England and as well as the birth of the first two to four children. This tradition places the wife Mary in the line of The Lord Baltimores. But the Family tradition is not supported by known facts and even Buckey's version has no firm proof. The origins of John, his immigration and marriage are shrouded in the mists and no one has been able to place his real beginnings.

They are known to have settled on a large tract of land by the Gunpowder River in Baltimore County, Maryland near the thriving seaport of Joppa. They had 8 children by John's will: five sons and 3 daughters. The lines of Mary who married John Watson are basically unknown to family researchers at this point. The lines of Ruth who married John Peteet have just been found and are in the preliminary stages of development. John Chenoweth was a gentleman blacksmith by trade and died in Frederick County, Virginia in the Spring of 1746 where his will was proven. What happened to his wife Mary is unknown, but his family is large and thriving. Eighteen of his grandsons and great grandchildren would serve in the American Revolution.

Recent work by Marie Eberle seems to indicated that John and Mary lived first in Pennsylvania before moving to Maryland and went to Virginia probably before 1740.

626 vii.   John Calvert, born 1689 in Orange Co, VA; died Jun 1739 in Orange Co, VA; married Jane.
viii.   Judith Calvert, born Sep 03, 1690 in Cumberland Co, PA.
