Researching our families turned up some unexpected results. Family stories once thought to have been truth have been disproven and replaced with sometimes surprising twists and turns.
I hope that by digging through hours upon hours of research, I can give them a voice again. By sharing their stories, I hope we can let them know that they are not forgotten. That their descendants are many and their struggles were not in vain.
Our ancestors were English noblemen and Southern slaveowners, knights and indentured servants, original Jamestown settlers and founders of small Indiana towns.
They came from Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Indiana and Maryland.
Our ancestors fought in the 100 Years War, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, for the Union and the Confederacy in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, WWII and Vietnam.
They were farmers, plantation owners, truck drivers, coal miners, railroad workers, architects, firemen, business owners and laborers.
They were what built this country.
Our ancestors came from Ireland, England, Prussia, Scotland, Canada and France.
But no matter their homeland, they were American.
