| For the past 3 years, I've been researching my Scottish and Irish roots using the many tools, tips, and resources available on the Internet. I've put together this simple web page to share my findings with family and friends. On the Grant-side, my family tree now spans 9 generations dating back to 1700s Scotland. On the McAleer-side, the tree spans 6 generations with a connection through my paternal grandmother to Abraham Lincoln!!! Turns out my grandmother's aunt Mary McGay (who I believe is actually her mother) married John Todd Stuart III who was a distant cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln. Who knew? My mother, Norma Grant, and her family, emigrated to the U.S. from Aberdeen, Scotland. The Grant family were blacksmiths, passing the trade from generation to generation. They lived in the Banffshire area of Scotland in the towns of Elgin and Craigellachie. The family owned and operated a blacksmith shop in Craigellachie called The Stand Fast Works somewhere around the turn of the century. My grandfather, William, learned the blacksmith trade and, after working at "The Works" as a young man, moved a few miles down the road with my grandmother, mother and uncles to Elgin to start his own blacksmith shop. They later emigrated to the U.S. around 1950. My grandfather William Grant married Grace "Cissy" Hutcheson who was raised by her grandmother Elspet Kemp on the Lendrum Farm near Turriff, Scotland. The Kemp's were also blacksmiths. Grace barely knew her biological parents, Grace Kemp and William Hutcheson, as her mother left her as a young child, emigrating to the U.S. around 1910. One of the mysteries I have solved through my genealogy search is locating Grace Kemp and William Hutcheson. Although there was little to go on, with the help of my cousin Karen Grant, we found records for Grace Kemp living in the U.S. under her married name Grace Beebe in Centerport, Long Island, New York. Grace (Kemp) Beebe died in 1967, never having reconnected with her daughter (my grandmother) who was living just a few states away in Ferndale, Michigan. William Stratton Bruce Hutcheson (his name seems to have gotten longer with each census record!) married Jane Ann McKessack in 1927 and was a hotelkeeper at the Hotel Selkirk in the County of Banff, Scotland. His family were slaters. My grandmother's birth certificate shows her father, William Hutcheson, as a slater who would have been the same age as William Stratton Bruce Hutcheson at that time. Wm Hutcheson died in 1936 in County of Banff, Scotland. There is no marriage record for Grace Kemp and William Hutcheson. The McAleer side of the family is also very interesting. My father, John E. McAleer, grew up in the Detroit, Michigan area. I've traced his ancestors back to the Kalamazoo, Michigan and Sandusky, Ohio area, and back to Ireland in the early 1800s. His great uncle, James R. McAleer (a.k.a. Jimmy McAleer), played professional baseball for the Cleveland Spiders, starting in 1889. He played for 13 seasons on 4 different teams and ended his big league playing career in 1907. Jimmy McAleer managed the Cleveland Browns for eight years and was part owner of the Red Sox in 1912-13. He played centerfield and caught the ball barehanded, as shown on his baseball card (see photo below). There are still many holes to fill and more stories to write.
