Notes for Helen Scallen: Helen Scallen was born in Minneapolis June 21, 1888, the second youngest of eight children. Her father, Joseph C. (1849-1944) was born in Lawrence, MA and her mother, Ellen Wallace (1854-1903) was born in Paterson, NJ.
They married in 1872 (supposedly in Paris(!) ... don't ask why, we have no idea), moved to Minneapolis in 1874, and lived at 2546 Cedar Avenue for most of their married years. They were parishoners of Holy Rosary Church (Dominican), where in the early 1900's Rev. Patrick V. Hartigan, O.P. became the pastor. He just happened to be an uncle of my grandfather James V. Coffey. James admired his uncle, went out to visit him on occasion, and soon was introduced to the Scallen family. He took a shine to their the youngest daughter, Helen, and married her on June 30, 1909 at Holy Rosary Church in Minneapolis - settling permanently in Troy. James' uncle did not perform the wedding ceremony, however. He died in Minneapolis in 1904, and is buried in a Dominican cemetery in New York City.
