Descendants of Louis Demus/DeMoss Generation No. 1 1. LOUIS1 DEMUS was born in France. Notes for LOUIS DEMUS: Since the 'son' was a Jr. we figure this was the father's name. We think he had a son William also and perhaps a son Charles. William lived near Louis in Maryland and married Ann. They had at least two children, Thomas, born Nov. 23, 1713 and Elizabeth born October 15, 1715 and documented in St. John's parish registers. Information on this line was gathered from many sources including a wonderful book put together by Jo Ann Hornby Child of LOUIS DEMUS is: 2. i. LOUIS2 DEMOSS, b. France. Generation No. 2 2. LOUIS2 DEMOSS (LOUIS1 DEMUS) was born in France. He married CATHERINE. Notes for LOUIS DEMOSS: Just when Louis came to America has not been determined. He was a Huguenot. Louis and Catherine settled on Deer Creek which enters present day Harford County at its northwest corner, meanders southeast about 5 to 10 miles and then runs east across the county until it empties into the Susquehanna River. Their land was on the south side of Deer Creek at the conjunctions of Stout Bottle Branch, or Bottle Stout Branch, depending upon which deed you read. He called it Frenchman's repose. In August 1719, Louis was fined for refusing to repair his road. This was in Baltimore County, Maryland. A tract of land called Frenchman's Repose was granted to Lewis in 1717. *All info on the first few generations of Demoss's came from the book assembled by Jo Ann Robertson Hronby of Wichita, Kansas. It is a wonderful book and well documented! His will started like most others: In the Name of God Amen, I Lewis Demos of Oppeckon in the said County of Orange and in the Colony of Virginia, Being Weak in Body, but of Sound memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same; and calling to miny uncertainties of the freal and Mortal life, and that it is appointed all men once to dye, and after Dearth to come to Judgment, do make and ordain this my Last Will & Testament in manner and for following Vizt. More About LOUIS DEMOSS: Temple: June 17, 1743, In Orange Co., recorded in Frederick Co in March 1744 Notes for CATHERINE: Her first four children were born in Baltimore and Hanford Counties and recorded in St. John's and St. George's Parish Registers. This was NE of Baltimore. St. John's church was located at Elk Neck, just SE of where Big Falls and Little Falls join to form the Gunpowder River. St. George's was in Spesutia Hundred, which is an old English term for an area of 100 families, each occupying 100 acres, more or less....St. John's church later moved to Joppa. Joppa grew because of the amount of tobacco, sotweed, grown. More than 30,000 hogsheads a year were shipped out, 100 ships each season, employing 1,600 seaman. A hogshead of 800 pounds was an oversized barrel, which, from farm to wharfside, became its own transport. Wooden pins called gudgeons were driven into top and bottom of each hogshead. Rolled on their sides and with shafts hooked to the pins and a horse in the shafts, these traveling hogsheads beat out rolling roads downhill to Joppa from all directions. Stocks and pillories were in constant use and the great powers were the schoolmaster, the lawyer and the doctor. The doctor was held in high esteem. In 1731 smallpox hit Joppa Town. She was born Abt. 1742 in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and died December 20, 1791 in Berkeley, Virginia. Notes for CHARLES DEMOSS: In his father, Louis' will, he was to receive three years schooling and one young mare. All goods, chattels, and movables were left to his mother, Catharine, to be divided between the three youngest sons, Thomas, James and Charles after her death or remarriage. In 1752/3 the final probate of the will of Louis Dumas was recorded in Frederick County, Virginia at Winchester, the youngest son, Charles, then being of age. Charles' birth was recorded in St. George's Parish Register. He owned 225 acres in Frederick, VA and on July 21, 1767, he purchased 163 acres in the County and Parish of Frederick on the drains of Opeckon Creek. It was next to the original 225. He was listed as a tax payer in Berkeley County, VA 1782-87 with sons Peter and Thomas. Charles bought 77 acres from Isaac Heaton on March 14, 1785, on drains of Opequon next to his other property. Mason Date: September 13, 1999 at 07:55:07 Hello all - I am still at a brick wall with Mary Billingsley born in 1805, Ohio who married John DeMoss Jr in Dearborn County, Indiana ( about 1821). I still believe she is the sister of John Otha, James and Charles Billingsley who all lived in Dearborn County. If she is their sister she is the daughter of Moses and Mary whose children were mostly born in Fort Redstone, PA. Mary Billingsley DeMoss names one of her boys, Otha. That is my major clue to the Moses and Mary line. Does anyone out there have a clue for me? Thank you for sharing. Judy N. Mason Gen. Abst. from Tenn. ABE8 FINCH (MAHALEY JANE7 DEMOSS, PETER6, JOHN J.5, JOHN4, CHARLES3, LOUIS2, LOUIS1 DEMUS) was born April 05, 1890 in Fowler, Otero Co., Colorado4, and died February 13, 1958 in Uravan, Colorado4. He married GERTRUDE PEARL GLOVER4 April 18, 1911 in Farmington, San Juan, New Mexico, daughter of JOHN GLOVER and LAURA STANSBERRY. She was born April 01, 1895 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, and died July 09, 1962 in Uravan, Colorado4. Notes for ABE FINCH: Abe was a big man. He loved his family and he was said to have gambled a little too much. When he was 18, he was struck by lightening while riding on top of a hay wagon. He lay paralyzed in bed for one year to the day. He was a massive man, very strong. He sheared sheep and it took several men to keep up with him. He also contracted to put up fence. He could carry two railroad ties in one hand. When he was living in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, he was trapping otter. That is where they were so hungry that when a wagon came through and a sack of flour fell off, Gertrude had one of her girls help her drag it in the house and hide it. Then when the folks came back looking for it, they pretended they didn't know anything about it. It tormented Gertrude until the day she died that they did that. He died when he was down on the river getting rocks and while trying to push the International truck out, he had a heart attack. More About ABE FINCH: Burial: Nucla, CO Notes for GERTRUDE PEARL GLOVER: Gertrudes little brother fell into a pot of hot water and died in Durango. When she was little, a priest would chase her and her sister across the bridge and shake something from a little bag at them. It always scared them to death. Once when they were so hungry a sack of flour fell off a truck in front of their house. They took it and when the people came back and asked if they'd found it, they told them no. Gertrude always was tormented by that, but she had nothing to feed her children, so she kept it. She was very honest and proud. My husband did not know his father had been married before. Just before his stepfather died, he told him that his father had been married before in Texas and had at least two children. My father in law's name was Dorsey Faller McCarty. We think he was from the Ft. Worth area. Most of his family was in Erath or Bosque County, Texas. If you have any information on the D. F.
