She was born August 20, 1870 in Ohio, and died November 10, 1950 in Marlboro, Ohio. Notes for GEORGE RIEMENSCHNEIDER II: George came over to America when he was 14. [1882] George couldn't pay his passage so hired himself out until it was paid. He learned the butcher trade and they bought the farm in 1915. He brought his brother and sisters over later. His sister Anna was 19. Katy and Jacob came over too. He had fiery red hair. He spoke English without an accent and the only German word that my dad, Harold Wertenberger ever remembers him saying was dunder something meaning thunderstorm. Gaylord said he remembers how he used to sit in his chair and enjoy his grandkids watching them run around.....once in a while reaching out and playfully pinching them. Katherine wrote about her father: "It was spring and mother said that dad was plowing a strip of ground by the creek. That year the woodchucks were really bad. They had holes along the field edge. So, Dad thought he'd get rid of some. So he took the double barreled shot gun and the mules to the field. He had the mules fastened to the plow to do the plowing. He saw a wood chuck so he layed down in the furrow, resting the gun against his shoulder, he sighted, pulled the trigger and away went the mules, plow to the barn. Dad came to the house with the gun, a black eye and a bruised shoulder. Mother never said what if anything was said, but I can just see blue smoke for I know it hurt my father. Another time, Dad's Jersey bull got out and he called the neighbors in to help. That bull was in the wheat field that they just cut and shocked. He tore nearly all the shocks apart and finally they got him back into the barn. One of the high lights of our farm in Randolph was our sugar grove. Dad always made a batch of syrup for us children to make popcorn balls and candy. George was a short man. The old home was on New Milford Road. He died at Anna and Rufus's house, his former home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1920 United States Federal Census Name: George Riemenschneider Home in 1920: Randolph, Portage, Ohio Estimated birth year: abt 1869 Birthplace: Bavaria Relation to Head of House: Head Spouse's name: Cora Father's Birth Place: Bavaria Mother's Birth Place: Bavaria Marital Status: Married Race: White Sex: Male Home owned: Own Year of Immigration: 1884 [actually 1883] Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Image: 243 Household Members: Name Age George Riemenschneider 51 Cora Riemenschneider 49 Ralph Riemenschneider 22 Maud Riemenschneider 17 Grace Riemenschneider 15 Walter Riemenschneider 13 Catharina Riemenschneider 11 John Riemenschneider 9 Anna Riemenschneider 7 Gladys Riemenschneider 4 8/12 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Geo Riemenschneider Arrival Date: 17 Jul 1883 Estimated birth year: abt 1869 Age: 14 Gender: Male Port of Departure: Bremen, Germany Destination: United States of America Place of Origin: Germany Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: German Ship Name: Salier Port of Arrival: New York Line: 38 Microfilm Serial: M237 Microfilm Roll: M237_468 List Number: 897 Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Source Citation: Year: 1883; Arrival: New York , United States; Microfilm serial: M237; Microfilm roll: M237_468; Line: 38; List number: 897. Naturalization: August 12, 1891, Stark Co., Ohio J. P. Fawcett judge Notes for CORA ELIZABETH HISSNER: She told her girls, "before you get married, it's honey, honey, honey and afterwards.....". She used to have to cook for 15 people plus threshers every Sunday. The Riemenschneider farm had 97 acres. It was bordered on one side by John Gall's Road. Hank and Harold (my dad) baled hay for him. Dutch pitched it in the baler and the boys would block and hand tie them. One would run the blower for the grain and the other would pitch and then tie the sack. At five o-clock they would stop and get the cows, milk, feed them and then aunt Esther would have supper ready for them. Glady's said her mother had a flat voice. She can remember her singing Amazing Grace in the kitchen. Glady's also said when she was little, her mother would gently smack her on the side of the face and tell her what she did wrong. Like "It's not nice to make fun of people". CATHERINE ELIZABETH4 RIEMENSCHNEIDER (GEORGE3, JOHANN NICOLAUS2, JOHANN HEINRICH1) was born October 1870 in Neuremburg or Geiselberg, Bavaria, Germany, and died February 1948 in Atwater, Ohio. She married JAMES MERRICK GEORGE DAY, son of HOMER DAY and FRANCES M.. He was born September 27, 1869 in Deerfield, Ohio, and died 1935 in Atwater, Ohio. Notes for CATHERINE ELIZABETH RIEMENSCHNEIDER: My father remembers her as wearing shoes like moccasins all the time. He said she was spunky, short and bowlegged like his grandpa, her brother George, and always kept her house neat as a pin. They lived in Atwater near the school house. Today I was copying onto a VHS tape, the movie I took of Uncle Gaylord's wedding last month and I decided to make a copy of a visit we made to Ohio in 1998. On the video, my father and his aunt Gladys Riemenschneider Unger were talking about several different things and at the same time another conversation was going on between my mother and Gladys's daughter Pauline. I was listening back and forth, as the tape was being copied, to the two different conversations, when they began to talk about the Day family and then my dad asked about Bobby. Aunt Gladys's said oh, you remember the old Buckeye Inn? And my dad said yes, Earl Strong ran a grocery store with a bar/grill type thing in it called the Buckeye Inn. Aunt Gladys said yes, Bobby's dad caught on fire and they ran out in the snow and rolled him in it but he died from the injuries. I thought ,wow, how tragic! Now the last time they asked aunt Gladys's about this family she didn't remember much. But this was 7 years ago and then she went on and talked about Stella Day, Rachel Day and Paul Day's daughter Muriel or something that was still in a home for whatever was wrong with her. But she said she'd ran into her and she remember Gladys. I think she had fits or convulsions. Harold Day had 3 or 4 kids she said and lived in Alliance and Helen had Bobbie Hushmire. She also said that George Riemenschneider was asked once if he'd like to go back to Germany and he said no, but that he would like to see his baby sister again. Gladys said George's brother Jacob was a diamond minor and had married a lady with a son. He gave his brother a diamond ring I believe and later died in a car accident. His wife never bothered to tell George but later called and wanted help which George refused because she had never bothered to tell him about his brother's death. She mentioned too that George's sister ? or niece was married and then divorced and then went back to Germany and married and had a son named Tom, she thought. *Janice McCarty-April 19th 2005 More About CATHERINE ELIZABETH RIEMENSCHNEIDER: Immigration: 1890 Naturalization: 1896 Notes for JAMES MERRICK GEORGE DAY: In the 1920 Census for Atwater, Ohio, he was listed as a Timer? in an Engineering Shop -He stated his parents were born in Ohio ************************************************************ Possible relatives Name: George Day Age in 1870: 23 Estimated Birth Year: 1846 Birthplace: Ohio Home in 1870: Atwater, Portage, Ohio Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Edinburg Roll: M593_1258 Page: 209 Image: 12 Year: 1870 Children of CATHERINE RIEMENSCHNEIDER and JAMES DAY are: i. GEORGE WALTER5 RIEMENSCHNEIDER (GEORGE4, GEORGE3, JOHANN NICOLAUS2, JOHANN HEINRICH1) was born July 29, 1906 in Alliance, Ohio, and died September 25, 1978. He married (1) RHOBY ESTHER HORNER August 03, 1930. She was born February 08, 1906 in Canton, Ohio, and died November 06, 1975 in Ravenna, Ohio. He married (2) MYRTLE BOWMAN December 26, 1977. Notes for GEORGE WALTER RIEMENSCHNEIDER: He was known as uncle Dutch. He was an educator, farmer, insurance man, store keeper. He was remembered as a feisty Dutchman, who could be as resolute as a granite coastline where waves of tenderness splashed over him like a beautiful Oceanside sunset. He was a Methodist. He taught school in East Canton, Marlboro, Atwater, and Randolph. Harold Wertenberger remembers uncle Dutch letting them get a cold Nehi pop in the milk house. He got Henry Hissner's rifle from the Civil War but it was stolen when he took it to school for a show and tell day. He was 72 when he died. Harold Wertenberger said, well the corn might be half knee high by the 4th of July. He said his grandpa Riemenschneider used to say [and the uncles too] the corn needs to be knee high by the 4th of July...........then he went off reminiscing again. He said the last year he was in Ohio, he was 15. He and his cousin Hank planted corn. He went into great detail on how that was done. It was very interesting. Hank would drive the tractor and dad would sit in the back on the corn planter. He had to keep the corn seed and fertilizer filled and drop the row marker each time they turned. It would plow about two inches deep, drop a seed and squirt the fertilizer in it. They had two disks on each side of the tractor tied up where he would let the proper side down to mark the rows so the tractor would go straight. He said they did that type of work on the farm-planting, harvesting, helped other farmers harvest, with his grandpa or uncle getting 1/3 of the crop and all the straw for doing the work. They fed about 25 hogs a day and helped butcher and smoke the meat when it was cool. They milked the cows twice a day. Squirting milk in the cats mouths. Listened to the radio in the barn playing sad teary eyed songs about the war, and big band music, but if you touched the radio it would really shock you. But that was a perk, to listen to the radio. They had one milking machine. Hank and him would fight over who got to use it all the time. If you touched the handle you got a big shock. He said it was so much fun when all the cousins would come over to help; they had a good time. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* On this hot June afternoon, as I sat with my dad [H. A.Wertenberger] watching my two grandson's Caleb and Daniel McCarty play, he mentioned that it was hot enough to cut hay. [It's 108 on the shed.......] And that led to some stories from his grandpa George Riemenschneider's farm in Ohio. He said on a hot day like this, they would harvest the hay. Grandpa Riemenschneider's farm was 80 acres big. They had a 5 acre sugar maple area, a barn, a big house, an area for 25 hogs, cows, horses, a large orchard, curing shed etc. They also had a large garden and raised corn, oats, hay, wheat etc. He loved maple syrup time. He described in great detail how they'd all come together [the huge family] at harvest time. They'd be fed a big dinner and get part of the harvest for helping. Each one of the boys in the family and the grandkids would help. No one thought of laying low. Each showed up and did their part. He said during the depression, he remembers his grandpa putting a sack of potatoes and sometimes apples in folks cars. He must have been generous. During the depression. They had a big hay wagon and as the hay was thrown in it, the kids would tromp around on it in a circle to flatten it down. They'd take it to the barn and had a special tool that would lift it out of the wagon and put it in the barn. He described each tool used in the process in great detail. Amazing how much he remembered. He said each year they'd put an electric fence around the hay field to keep the cows out. He said his uncles would grab the wire and one of the boys and it would hurt clear to the bones. Sometime's they'd grab the wire and touch their ears. He said they thought it was great fun, but he thought they were mean ... He said his grandpa was a good butcher and so was his son uncle Dutch, a very good one. He had regular customers who'd come and buy a pig each year. He'd butcher them and even cure the meat if they wanted him too. He can remember huge tables of hams and bacon. The ladies would rub the meat with curing salt, then they would hang in the curing shed and hickory sticks that had been cut by the boys, would burn to cure the meat. After grandpa retired, they quit the hog business, just doing for themselves what the family needed-he guessed.
