On October 11, 1882 bought Lot 13b in Franklin Centre from William Cantwell. It conntained approximately one-half acre of land and had a house and other buildings erected theron. It was to this house that he moved his family. This property remained in the family until it was sold in 1994.

McMillan Homestead, Franklin Centre 100 years old. by Diane Carson
The Chateauguay Valley is fortunate to have a wealth of wonderful family farms that spread out from the Dundee borders to as far away as Hemmingford. Many of these farms have histories and traditions dating back to the early days of settlement in the Chateauguay Valley. In 2004 several will be celebrating as their homesteads reach 100 years of ownership in the family name.
The very first McMillan who came to Franklin Centre was William McMillan in the 1800's. He came from County Derry in Ireland with is wife Martha and their 5 children and took up ownership of a small property and a house in the Franklin Area. The family grew up and most moved on to other locations. Only Alexander remained in Franklin, and he inherited all the property. Alexander McMillan was a blacksmith and wheelwright making buggies and sleighs during the slow periods in winter. The couple, (wife Jennet Oliver) had one son, Wilbert and a daughter, Edith in the late 1880'S.
In 1904 Wilbert McMillan purchased a farm located at the edge of the village of Franklin Centre, and in 1907 married Mildred Hanna. The couple had four children who were born from 1909 to 1920. They were Olive, Luella, Ray, and Mae. Luella now lives in Ormstown and her sister, Mae, in Burke N.Y
Son Ray inherited the family farm and married Emma Hope in 1941 They had three children, John Alexander, Linda Lou and Patricia Ann.
According to Linda McMillan Upton, "When we were growing up we showed at all the local fairs, doing quite well with cattle, horses, pigs rabbits and chickens." In 1999 Linda and husband Gary Upton became the owners of the McMillan home farm.
The McMillan Farm ran a mixed farming operation of maple syrup production, apple orchards, and a herd of registered Ayrshire dairy cows.
Linda and Gary have carried on the sugaring operation using the same equipment and tradition as her dad, Ray. They produce apples as well, and still have several of the old varieties that not many of the growers continue to produce. The Uptons run a year around business at their kiosque, including the apple-picking season, special weekend activities, farm tours, receptions and parties. They will serve as one of the UPA open door farms on September 12, 2004. The modern, spacious barn has a well-stocked gift shop that has something for everyone.
Standing close to the new barn is the century old charming stone corn silo that is in remarkable condition. The distinct arch design on the front of the large family home remains the same as it did for a lifetime.
From the year 1904 to 2004 many changes evolved on the McMillan homestead - the first 100 years. May good luck, prosperity and happiness continue for many more generations of McMillan descendants.
