John McMillan Falls From Roof Of A Barn
John McMillan, of this village, was seriously injured by falling from the roof of a barn at Clark Goldie’s near Rockburn, P. Q., on Wednesday. Mr. McMillan who is a carpenter, had been engaged by Mr. Goldie in the construction of a new barn, and while helping to raise a cupola to the roof of the building Mr. McMillan lost his balance and fell from the staging to the ground, a distance of some 15 feet or more. In the fall he struck a ladder, but the rung broke, letting him fall to the ground with great force. He landed on his head and shoulders, and when picked up was unconscious and his condition was found to be very serious indeed. Medical aid was immediately summoned and everything possible was done for the injured man, but at the hour of going to press grave fears are entertained for his recovery.

Injuries Proved Fatal - John McMillan Passes Away Tuesday Afternoon.
John McMillan, an account of whose serious injury was noted in these columns last week, died at the home of Clark Goldie at Rockburn, P. Q., as about 5 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon. It will be recalled that Mr. McMillan sustained the fatal injuries by falling from the staging on a barn he was building for Mr. Goldie, and striking on his head and shoulders his backbone was splintered. An operation was performed, when two pieces of the splintered bone were removed, and for a short time he was relieved of the intense suffering, but the relief was only temporary, however, and he continued to suffer until death relieved him. The deceased was born in Franklin, P. Q., sixty-one years ago, and with the exception of the period from March of a year ago, when he moved to this village, he had always made him home there. He was a citizen who was esteemed in the community and his sad and unfortunate death is a source of extreme sorrow. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. John P. Lavery and Misses Maud and Leona, and three sons, Sylvester, who is in the Canadian Northwest; Harry, of Brooklyn, and Rupert, of Chateaugay, and to these is extended the sincerest sympathy. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s church on Thursday morning, Rev. E. G. Brice officiating.

While working on a barn near the village of Rockburn, P. Q., a week ago, John McMillan, a well-known carpenter of Chateaugay, lost his balance and fell to the ground, striking a ladder in his descent. He landed on his head and shoulders and was picked up unconscious. His condition was considered critical.

Obituary of John McMillan
On Wednesday of last week Mr. John McMillan was putting the finishing touches to the roof of Mr. Clark Goldie's barn (in Franklin Centre), and was in the act of lifting the ventilator to its place, when he lost his footing, and overbalanced, striking the top of a ladder placed against the eaves, and falling heavily to the ground. He was at once picked up and carried in the house of Mr. Goldie. Dr. Moore was sent for, who found that he had broken his back at the shoulders in such a manner as to cause paralysis of the lower limbs. As it was not deemed advisable under the circumstances to try to take him to Montreal, Dr. Moore operated on Friday forenoon, assisted by Drs. McEwen and Rowat, when they found the spinal cord was not injured, and removed some pieces of bone.
The operation was entirely successful and the patient was doing as well as could be expected and hopes are held out for his recovery, although it will be some time before he can be removed to his home at Chateaugay, N.Y.
Later - Mr. McMillan passed away on Tuesday.

  Notes for Frederick McMillan:
Source: Recollections of James Vaugh and Ray McMillan.
Fred McMillan lived on a small farm next door to James Vaugh's parents' farm in Burke, NY. Fred was a short and much older man than James Vaugh's father. James has many fond memories of going there as a young boy and receiving cookies from Lydia. Fred never seemed to be sad - always a jolly little man who worked hard at his little farm. As farmers do, Fred and Mr. Vaugh often exchanged work. Fred would help Mr. Vaugh butcher a pig in exchange for help with putting some hay in the barn, etc. Fred never drove a car, he always drove a horse and buggy. He and Mr. Vaugh had almost a father-son relationship. Fred knew Mr. Vaugh's father and his grandfather.
James' grandmother said that Fred was related to the McMillans of Franklin Centre - to "Red Alex".
Everyone thought a lot of both Lydia and Fred. As they never had any children, there is now no one left to carry on the Fred McMillan name.
Apparently Fred liked to drink and was always involved in racing horses. Lydia was a very large woman and a very, very good cook. Ray McMillan knew both of them and went to their funerals.
