Notes for Alexander McMillan:
The Foresters:
The first Canadian Court was established in 1878 for the I.O.F. Court Franklin Centre was formed on Nov. 1, 1894 and Alexander McMillan became a member, on November 14, 1894 he was appointed a Deputy by the High Chief Ranger of Montreal, Mr. Victor Morin.

On August 21, 1912 Alexander McMillan gave the sum of $6.00 being 20 1/c on Three Shares of stock in the District of Beauharnois Line Stock Breeders' Association, Limited. This paper was signed by J.G. Bryson, Secretary-Treasurer. (3 shares of Ormstown Fair, Ormstown, Quebec). At present one share each is owned by his great grandchildren: Pat, Linda and John McMillan.

Alexander owned the property which became Moise's General Store. Alexander also owned the blacksmith shop beside it. On the other side was a barn where he kept his horses and buggies.
Across the road, where Bourdon's house now stands, was a carriage shop on the second floor with a wooden ramp which led up - so that he could work on his cutters and wagons on the second floor. On the ground floor there was an apartment which was rented to Ernie Frier. Philip Prevost eventually bought the land and the old building was torn down.
The flowers which are painted on the glass doors in Ray McMillan's kitchen were painted by Lorraine Tremblay and she used tubes of paint which were left over from Alexander McMillan with which he painted his buggies and sleighs. Ray McMillan had the last buggy made by Alexander McMillan. It had a cab to it and had side curtains. (The paint was used to paint stripes on the buggies and sleighs..) Ray McMillan also had Alexander's tongue sleigh which had a pole so that you could connect a team of horses. This large sleigh had two large seats instead of a single seat.

Alexander McMillan was a member of the Town Council for years, as well as Mayor of Franklin Centre until his resignation. Alexander was Chairman of the School Board at the time of his death and Havelock Fair lost its first Vice President. He was also one of the Directors of Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

Notes for Janet Oliver:
Source: Recollections by Mildred Mae McMillan, August 1988.
Jennet Oliver had sugar dibetes very bad. She had to take insulin shots every day. When she advanced in years, she would try to give herself shots and would just jab through her clothes if not watched. She would be sitting when all of a sudden her mouth would start to twitch and she would then go into a coma. Momma would take juice and sometimes food and put it in an eye dropper and try to place some in between her lips but it would just run back out again because she couldn't swallow.
Jennet would have a small scale and have to weigh her food before she ate. Everything she ate had to be weighed and she always felt that she never got enough and was always hungry.
Jennet always wore a large apron with big pockets. When Momma did the wash, she would always find pieces of sugar candy made of maple syrup and meat and cake in those pockets. Jennet would sneak the food at meal time and save them for when she was hungry because she was not allowed to eat as much as she wanted.
In those days we didn't know how to properly feed a person with diabetes and finally Jennet Oliver died in an insulin coma.

  Notes for Edith Bradshaw McMillan:
As for Edith Bradshaw, she became a nurse and Aunt Mae said that she ended up working in a physicatric hospital in Philadelphia and said it was probably a good place for her as she had a vile temper and no one liked her. Guess they divorced and she went to the U.S.A. She was never heard from again and kept no contact here in Canada. I would presume they took care of the two girls and when they left - that was that. I also think that when they went to live with Alexander and Jennet they were quite old - not as young children or babies - maybe that's why there was no real attachment, they were just raised with room and board and left when ready. Hope that helps.

Obituary - Paper unknown.
It was with deep regret the community learned on Sunday of the death of Mrs. Henry McMillan after an illness of over a year during which she was devotedly cared for by her husband and daughter. Mrs. McMillan had spent a few years in California and in Saskatchewan but with that exception had lived her life in this community and had been a friend to everybody and it might be truly said had thus found a friend in everybody. An active worker in all affairs of both church and village she will be greatly missed indeed. Mrs. McMillan is survived by her husband and one daughter, one sister Mrs. Cain, and one brother, Mr. W. Willie Priest was a blacksmith and was very strong. For years people were afraid of him as he was a very violent man. He always carried a hammer with him and Jessie was very frightened of him also. She never slept upstairs for many years because of that. The Doctor finally committed him to the Douglas Hospital in Verdun for the mentally ill, but Jessie never went to visit him. Ray McMillan offered many times to take her in to see him but she always refused. Ray took Bella, Ben Pennington and Bella's sister, Mrs. Champ, from Howick, in to see Willie but never Jessie.

The social which was held on the lawn at the home of Mr. & Mrs. William Priest last Wednesday evening was largely attended about 350 being present. There were guests from Chateaugay, Cherubuco and Frontier, N.Y., Rockburn, Covey Hill, Ormstown, Havelock and Huntingdon. After supper a short program was rendered. Miss Taylor from Montreal sang some very beautiful solos, accompanied by Mrs. Gibson on the violin and Miss Marjorie Gibson on the organ. The Misses Gibson and Cain gave a piano duet. Quite a lot of amusement was caused when little Miss Lima Rowe drew the lottery ticket for garters out of the paper sack held by Rev. Mr. Payne. Charles Dickenson being the first to receive a pair. There were six pairs distributed for 100 tickets sold. Miss Payne had charge of the handkerchief booth and had some lovely handkerchiefs for sale, some being imported from Scotland.
Mrs. Obrine served ice cream; Miss Millie Brisco sold supper tickets. The receipts amounted to $108 which is being used for the improvement of the Anglican cemetery.

Willie Priest used to get very violent. He would hit Jessie. For a long time she would sleep downstairs on the sofa. He was finally committed to the Douglas Insane Asylum in Verdun, Montreal, Quebec. Ray McMillan would visit him but Jessie would never go to see him. She had had enough and was still frightened of him.
Ray McMillan would cut the hay at the Priest place at Bridgetown, Quebec. The bales of hay were always full of snakes - mostly just halves of snakes as they got cut up when baled. One day Pat McMillan was watching her father baling and a bee stung her. She started to cry and Jessie came over and said, "just spit on the damn thing and it'll stop hurting!"
Jessie always wore coveralls with a bib, and a man's shirt and a big straw hat. She was a very active and hard working woman.
She still slept on the sofa, even after Willie was gone. She had ulcers on her legs and used to pile up two or three pieces of wood on the sofa to fit under her knees.
When Ray McMillan took her to the hospital, the nurse asked for her teeth and she got really angry as she had all her own teeth and was very insulted.
When Jessie died, Ray went down to claim the body and asked where her clothes were. Someone in the hospital had taken all her belongings and there was nothing in her closet.
Jessie left the farm to her sister Gertie Rennie (Gentle) Sadler who lived in Florida. Gertie sold the farm to Ray McMillan in 1966. When Ray McMillan died in 1993, the farm was given to Pat McMillan, who still has it in 2005.
