Notes for Edith Bradshaw McMillan: As for Edith Bradshaw, she became a nurse and Aunt Mae said that she ended up working in a physicatric hospital in Philadelphia and said it was probably a good place for her as she had a vile temper and no one liked her. Guess they divorced and she went to the U.S.A. She was never heard from again and kept no contact here in Canada. I would presume they took care of the two girls and when they left - that was that. I also think that when they went to live with Alexander and Jennet they were quite old - not as young children or babies - maybe that's why there was no real attachment, they were just raised with room and board and left when ready. Hope that helps. |

Notes for William Harry Priest: Superior Court Abstract of the Register of Civil Status of the Congregational Church at Franklin Centre, Quebec: (30th August 1890) William Harry Priest, son of Hartwell Priest (deceased) of the township of Franlin, in the County of Huntingdon, P.Q., Farmer and his wife Elizabeth McMillan, of the aforesaid place, was born on the twenty-third day of September in the year 1881 and baptized by me on the 30th day of August 1890. Signed: William James Watt - officiating minister Witnesses: Elizabeth McMillan and Cora Priest Source: Data received from various descendants of Wilbert McMillan Willie Priest was a blacksmith and was very strong. For years people were afraid of him as he was a very violent man. He always carried a hammer with him and Jessie was very frightened of him also. She never slept upstairs for many years because of that. The Doctor finally committed him to the Douglas Hospital in Verdun for the mentally ill, but Jessie never went to visit him. Ray McMillan offered many times to take her in to see him but she always refused. Ray took Bella, Ben Pennington and Bella's sister, Mrs. Champ, from Howick, in to see Willie but never Jessie. |

Notes for Jessie Ethel Rennie: Source: Data received from various descendants of Wilbert McMillan July 18, 1923 The social which was held on the lawn at the home of Mr. & Mrs. William Priest last Wednesday evening was largely attended about 350 being present. There were guests from Chateaugay, Cherubuco and Frontier, N.Y., Rockburn, Covey Hill, Ormstown, Havelock and Huntingdon. After supper a short program was rendered. Miss Taylor from Montreal sang some very beautiful solos, accompanied by Mrs. Gibson on the violin and Miss Marjorie Gibson on the organ. The Misses Gibson and Cain gave a piano duet. Quite a lot of amusement was caused when little Miss Lima Rowe drew the lottery ticket for garters out of the paper sack held by Rev. Mr. Payne. Charles Dickenson being the first to receive a pair. There were six pairs distributed for 100 tickets sold. Miss Payne had charge of the handkerchief booth and had some lovely handkerchiefs for sale, some being imported from Scotland. Mrs. Obrine served ice cream; Miss Millie Brisco sold supper tickets. The receipts amounted to $108 which is being used for the improvement of the Anglican cemetery. Source: Data received from various descendants of Wilbert McMillan Willie Priest used to get very violent. He would hit Jessie. For a long time she would sleep downstairs on the sofa. He was finally committed to the Douglas Insane Asylum in Verdun, Montreal, Quebec. Ray McMillan would visit him but Jessie would never go to see him. She had had enough and was still frightened of him. Ray McMillan would cut the hay at the Priest place at Bridgetown, Quebec. The bales of hay were always full of snakes - mostly just halves of snakes as they got cut up when baled. One day Pat McMillan was watching her father baling and a bee stung her. She started to cry and Jessie came over and said, "just spit on the damn thing and it'll stop hurting!" Jessie always wore coveralls with a bib, and a man's shirt and a big straw hat. She was a very active and hard working woman. She still slept on the sofa, even after Willie was gone. She had ulcers on her legs and used to pile up two or three pieces of wood on the sofa to fit under her knees. When Ray McMillan took her to the hospital, the nurse asked for her teeth and she got really angry as she had all her own teeth and was very insulted. When Jessie died, Ray went down to claim the body and asked where her clothes were. Someone in the hospital had taken all her belongings and there was nothing in her closet. Jessie left the farm to her sister Gertie Rennie (Gentle) Sadler who lived in Florida. Gertie sold the farm to Ray McMillan in 1966. When Ray McMillan died in 1993, the farm was given to Pat McMillan, who still has it in 2005. |
