Notes for John Wingate McCoy:
Family indicates he told of guard duty in War of 1812 during bombardment of
Ft. McHenry. Service record for a John McCoy in MD does exist, private in
Captain Wm. Brown Jr.'s Co., 6th Regt. Maryland Militia, 19aug1814 to
05nov1814, deserted 05nov1814. The seige of Ft. McHenry occurred September
13-14, 1814, preceded by General Ross burning Washington DC and taking
Alexandria, VA.

George is the missing link to tie all the Alexander McCoy story together.
Is the George adm. of estate of Alexander McCoy in Adams Co., OH, the same
as the George mentioned by the Brown Co., IL history, and the son of
Alexander Sr. who fathered Alexander McCoy b. 1847? I am willing to believe
this, because it provides the simplest explanation for all the existing
facts. However, it is also possible that Alexander b. 1847 is actually the
son of yet another unknown brother of Alexander Jr.

Notes for Luke Perry:
By 1880, Luke Perry is living with his son Edmond, and Eliza McCoy is gone.
They are living next door to James K. Polk Perry and a couple doors away
from the Harmon R. Honefenger family. His obituary indicates he moved to
Pettis Co., MO in 1832, then to Brown Co., IL about 1833. Also noted are
8 children (6 living: James H., Elisha, Reuben, Edmund, Benjamin, Gideon) by
his first wife, and a daughter by his second wife.

7. Mary² McCoy (Alexander¹) was born Abt. 1815 in MD ²³.²⁴ She married John (Laban?) Smith December 22, 1831 in Adams Co., OH ²⁵.

Notes for Mary McCoy:
Adams County records: "Dec the 21, 1831 Mr. Darlington Plees let Leban Smith
have licens for I am eplied that he should have my dautor Mary." (signed)
Alexander McCoy. On back of slip of paper, John Smith to Mary McCoy. The
name Leban may be nothing but a misreading of John. This document proves that
Alexander is indeed the father of the Mary and therefore all the others named
in the estate papers of Alexander McCoy, Jr. in Brown Co., IL. Unclear if
chidren attributed here are correct???

Notes for John (Laban?) Smith:
It is not at all certain that I have located the right Smith family. The
children are those associated with Mary Smith (b. MD, parents b. IRE and VA)
in the 1880 census. However, Brown Co. Cemeteries seems to indicate a
family with the same names belongs with a Joseph Smith.

Notes for Alexander McCoy:
There are many mysteries surrounding this family. Existence of 3 wives
from Hist. Shelby & Moultrie Cos., IL, 1881. Children assigned according to
listed death dates of the various wives. From this information, "Alexander
McCoy Jr." estate in Brown Co. would likely pertain to Alexander son of
George, and not, as Wm. Perry indicates, to Alexander McCoy the immigrant.
Several of the children were married in Brown Co., IL 1860-1861 by Joseph
Patterson, JP.
