2. Mary Anne (Polly)² Barnett (William¹) was born 1801 in PA ⁵, and died Aft. 1860 in PA. She married William Miller Abt. 1836 in Armstrong Co., PA.

Information on this marriage from IGI. Found family in 1850 census, p. 96B,
1860 p. 445, and 1870 p. 270, all North Buffalo Tp. No attempt to determine
parentage, though this should be done in case the families intermarried
more than once. Will on file, Bk. 3 p. 218, names wife Mary Ann, son John,
daughters Sarah Jane, Isabel Ralston, and Margaret Ann, as well as Peter Hine
formerly of Freeport, and John J. Ralston, the eldest son of Isabel, dated 13
jul 1876 with codicil 06 oct 1876.

4. Elizabeth² Barnett (William¹) was born June 15, 1805 in Armstrong Co., PA ⁶, and died July 05, 1883 in Armstrong Co., PA ⁷. She married (1) Nathaniel Henry 1840 in Armstrong Co., PA. She married (2) William Dickey Abt. 1843 in Armstrong Co., PA.

Notes for Nathaniel Henry:
The estate of Nathaniel Henry of Sugarcreek Tp. came before the probate court
20 sep 1842. Letters of administration were granted to Stewart Henry Jr. and
Elizabeth Henry (widow), sureties were Stewart Henry Sr. and Jeremiah Banner.
The administrators' account was approved 17 aug 1846. (Armstrong Co. Probate
Register Docket 1, p. 158). History (1883) provides information: David
Henry settled 1797 on 386 acres straddling Sugar Ck. and Washington Tps.,
sons Stewart, Alexander, Nathaniel, dau. Margaret Colwell.

5. Joseph² Barnett (William¹) was born 1810 in PA ¹⁰, and died Aft. 1884 in Van Buren Co. IA?¹¹. He married (1) Margaret Ann _____. He married (2) Mary Ann Murdock Abt. 1841 in Armstrong Co., PA.

Notes for Joseph Barnett:
By 1850, Joseph owned about 196 acres of land in North Buffalo Tp., Armstrong
Co., PA. This land was conveyed by the sheriff 07 sep 1868 to another party
for $5,000. Was Joseph bankrupt by then? Unable to pay taxes? See History
of Armstrong Co., pp. 460-461. He had purchased the land 21 sep 1833 for $475
(total of 235.8 acres at that time). He first appears in Van Buren Co., IA in
the 1870 census, Harrisburg Tp., p. 270B.

Notes for Margaret Ann _____:
Death reported in Armstrong Democrat, Thursday 26 nov 1840. She is listed as
Margaret Anne Barnett, consort of Joseph Barnett, esq., of Buffalo Tp., and a
native of Ireland. Grave stone apparently illegible, "wife of Joseph", along
with two infant graves, children of Joseph. We strongly suspect she was
Margaret Ann Colwell, a daughter of William Colwell and Anne Bingham whose
daughter Matilda b. 1811 IRE married Joseph's brother John Barnett 08 mar
1838.

Notes for Mary Ann Murdock:
Evidence for Mary Ann's maiden name comes from the death certificate of
Mattie Barnett Baird, which, however, contains many errors. Her tombstone
was transcribed as Mary C. Barnett. Also, there is some evidence for an
additional wife. It is not certain that Mary Ann was actually the mother of
William H. Barnett, and there is a long gap before the next child. The
Ancestral File (1996) has 2 unnamed children by the first wife. One possible
approach would be to check 1850 census for families from DE and MD.

Notes for James Presley Barnett:
This is the person identified as Pressly Barnett in the 1996 Ancestral
File, with estimated birthdate 1835. 1840 census has been reviewed to
verify that one or more children have not been missed in this family. Some
attempt needs to be made to find his death certificate, which may indicate
his mother's name.

Elmer E. Barnett, born March 1861 in PA; died Aft. 1936.

6. Robert E.² Barnett (William¹) was born September 1811 in Armstrong Co., PA ¹⁴, and died Aft. 1900 in Allegheny Co., PA ¹⁵. He married Mahala E. Garrison Abt. 1841, daughter of Catharine Goressen.

Notes for Robert E. Barnett:
Robert Barnett owned 132.5 acres of land in Jefferson Co., PA jointly with
his father. His father bequeathed his half interest in this property to his
daughters Anne and Elizabeth in 1838. A deed in 1840 shows Robert Barnett,
Anne Barnett, and Elizabeth Henry grantees (thus completing purchase from the
prior owner), and as grantors in 1856, Elizabeth in the mean time having
married William Dickey, with no explanation of how Robert and William had

acquired their interest in the property in the first place.

The history of this parcel begins with warrants 3397 and 3387, then William Bingham who died in England, then from his estate to John and Sarah Summerville. Robert Barnett et al. purchased it from Summerville in 1840, vol. 3 p. 154, 132+ acres in
Eldred Tp., and sold it in 1856, vol. 9 p. 79. It is not known whether this William Bingham is related to Anne Bingham, wife of William Colwell, Irish immigrant who settled near the William Barnett family in North Buffalo Tp., Armstrong Co.

The deed in 1856 names Robert Barnett's wife Mahala G., and notes their residence in Birmingham, Allegheny Co. 1860 census finds them in borough of Birmingham, post office Buchanan. Directory for 1861-62 has Robert Barnett, pattern maker, Centre
near Manor. In 1862-63 he is a "gentleman", Center near Washington. By 1868-69 he has moved, Webster near Francis. In 1869-70 the first listing for the family business appears, Barnett & Bros. Plumbers, Gas & Steam Fitters, 129 4th Ave. Later
addresses (from directories and censuses) are on Bedford Ave. near Francis, Ward 13. A map in the 1899 directory shows an alley called Barnett Ave. near this intersection. Sons Cornelius and Oliver lived in this area.

Barnett, guardian James K. Duff. Mahala is listed as Mahalia Garrison in the
1996 Ancestral File. The name is probably Garrison, but in the 1850 census
we find Catherine Goressen living with the Barnett family.

7. John² Barnett (William¹) was born 1814 in PA ¹⁶, and died June 1874 in Memphis, Scotland Co., MO. He married Matilda Colwell March 08, 1838 in Armstrong Co., PA ¹⁷, daughter of William Colwell and Anne Bingham.

Notes for John Barnett:
IGI indicates hypothetical birthdate of 1827, and spouse's surname as
Caldwell. Evidently the IGI informant did not work with the census records.
However, information includes descendants of Martha Jane Barnett and
information about the family's later migration to Scotland Co., MO and
beyond. John Barnett family is in Johnson Tp., Scotland Co., MO (P.O.
Memphis) in 1870 census.

Notes for Matilda Colwell:
IGI information shows name Caldwell. However, the census is very clear
about this family. Family records suggest she was actually born in Ireland.
It is just possible that Joseph's first wife Margaret Ann was her sister.

Notes for (son) Barnett:
located in 1870 census, Scotland Co., MO, where children are identified only
by initials, and where entry for the last child in the family is too faint to
read. Further, none of the children's ages in this census is exactly as
expected from other records, even though the children are listed in the
correct order.
