In 1902, the family moved to a farm southeast of St. Charles, in Warren County, where Mabel and her three brothers and one sister attended Pleasant Valley Country School. In 1914, the family became members of the Ohio Baptist Church, also known as the Broadhorn Church. As a teenager, Mabel started attending the Broadhorn Ladies Aid with her mother Nellie. Mabel recalled that she was given the job of caring for the horse she and her mother rode to the meetings. Later, Mabel was chosen to be the Aids' treasurer and held this position for more than 30 years. She also served as the Sunday School treasurer. On March 15, 1922, she was married to Clyde Anderson Minard and they moved to the "Minard Home Farm" east of Truro, where they lived the rest of their lives. Clyde died in 1977. They had one child, John Edward, who was born in 1925. Mabel had a talent for sewing and fine needlework which she enjoyed until her death. Before her marriage, she worked as a seamstress, making clothes for the ladies in the neighborhood. During the years some of her crocheting and needlework were exhibited at the Iowa State Fair. She had a green thumb and had a great love for the outdoors, working in her large vegetable and flower garden. Mabel and Clyde loved to take their little fold-down camper on trips and to many state parks.
