Robert McConahey (spelling) was a native of Ireland who settled in Westmoreland County. In 1798 he arrived in South Shenango with knapsack and camp kettle on his back, and settled upon a farm which he afterward occupied. He built a rough cabin and, leaving some of his possessions within it returned to Westmoreland County for horses, sheep and cattle which he drove before him over the mountains.Upon his arrival he found that Indians had broken in and stolen his clothes and dishes during his absence.

Robert McConaughey (1) of this group and his wife, Margaret Story, May well be found to belong to one or the other of groups here listed.Robert McConaughey (1) was born in 1767, and came to America after the Revolution but before 1797.The legendary story of this family compares with similar versions in other lines, which may assist us eventually in a "tying" together. This group E family originated in Scotland where they fought with Robert Bruce at the Battle of Bannock burn.Six brothers, each more than six feet tall, marched three on the right hand and three on the left hand of the Bruce;and after the battle four lay dead on the field.Other versions say the were all red-headed !We have identified this line as the Nebraska group for there is where we found them;and they have been early of that state;curiously enough, however, presently using the spelling of McConnaha.

Comments: RCM
As noted above Robert may have had ties to Westmoreland however attempts to tie him with those McConahey's who settled and stayed in Westmoreland County have been unsuccessful thus far.In my review of McConahey Society annual bulletins I find numerous references to the Ligonier line (Westmoreland) beginning with David McConahey Sr, who immigrated from Ireland in the later half of the 18th century with his wife Jane Platt, 3 sons and a daughter. The Childrens'' names were James, John, Robert and Elizabeth.About David's son Robertbulletin #4 states:Born probably in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Was taxed in Path Valley Franklin County, PA in 1786, along with his father, brothers James and John:Was evidently still unmarried in 1790 since he is not listed as head of household and is therefore presumably one of the males over 16 listed in fathers household (under McConche, David)It is also presumed that he moved to Westmoreland County in 1800 when his father and mother did, However, so far no other records of him have been found.
Bulletin #5 attempts to paint a relationship between these two Roberts and speculates that they may be one and the same. After referring to the above from bulletin #4, Bulletin #5 goes on :If Robert was taxed in 1786 he was surely then over 21.This would be so close to Robert born in 1767 and so "co-incidental" that one appeared when the other disappeared that it bears consideration.....If David and Jane are his parents. The remaining Bulletins thru 1986 have no additional reference to this possible connection. As indicated there are conflicting accounts on where Robert originally settled when he arrived in America.I tend to put morereliance on his arriving at South Shenango Twp from Chester County rather than Westmoreland and that there is no direct relationship between the Robert of Westmoreland and this Robert of South Shenango.

(Note: Sarah and David Story Lived and raised their family in Nebraska but must have gone to Ohio in later years.) and her only brother John McConahey. Now we've always been told that John and Matthew died young and Robert Jr. was the only son but she was an old lady dying.Maybe that's why Dr. John McConaha had to go back and help settle the estate. |
