Notes for J
OHN MCGINNIS:
John was 29 years old when he married Mary Shields. She was several years older than he and was a sister to the wife of William. Some think this was John's second marriage. He sometimes signed his name as John, Sr. indicating that he had a son named John, Jr. Some think he was the father of Levi Q. C. McGinnis who was hung for murder in 1861 in the same area of Forsyth County. John had a lot of money at one time but something happened to it. Someone paid for an appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court for Levi, but the sentence was upheld. If there was a John, Jr., he was dead before 1880 as he was not listed in John's estate.

After the death of his wife Mary, John married Cassender Owens, who was several years younger than he. By 1870 Cassender was dead and John was living with his youngest daughter, Mary Ann.

Notes for J
AMES MCGINNIS:
James Jr. owned land and farmed in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Records show he owned land and slaves, some of which he inherited from his father.

He must have been well respected in the community. He was involved in civic affairs and his name appears several times in the Athens, Georgia newspaper. He was a member of the Gwinnett County Militia and was active in a political party from his district. He served on the Gwinnett County Grand Jury in 1827 and again in 1833. He was a Justice of the Peace in Dist. 405 in 1841. That same year he was a delegate to the Democratic Replican Party Convention in Indian Springs. In 1842 he and William Lawless, a brother-in-law, were appointed administrators of the estate of Benjamin Pruitt, their father-in-law. They disposed of property of the estate in Forsyth and Campbell Counties, Georgia.

In addition to farming, James had a contract with the U.S. Postal Service to haul mail. He also owned and operated a ferry across the Chattahooche River north of Lawrenceville on the Collins Plantation. The road from Lawrenceville to the ferry was known as McGinnis Ferry Road. The road is still called the same.

After 1845 James and Leah moved to Bartow County, Georgia near the town of Stilesboro. All of their children apparently moved with them except their older daughters (three according to the 1820 Census) who were probably married with families. They owned land, farmed and died there. They are buried near Taylorsville, Georgia.

Notes for L
EAH PRUITT:
