Find Family

June 26 2004 - I have just recieved EMAIL from Msgr Kevin O'Callaghan [dkoc@iol.ie], he has found in his records of the parish of Bandon, Co. Cork, Ireland, the marriage of Michael McCarthy & Catherine Regan 1824, 03, 02 & their baptism of Anne 1826, 12, 11.
Following the Irish naming convention Michael's Father may have been Thomas, mother maybe Mary, or Catherine. Catherine Regan's parrents may have been William, & Ann Regan.
In searching the 1823 Tithe applotment records I have found in the parrish of Innishannon diocese of Cork, Co. Cork Michael McCarthy in the town land of Barna also Dennis Murphy, Thomas, James, & John Butler, John Crowley, & Timothy, & Michael Kelly. In Ranarouga there are Michael, & Thomas Carthy, Thomas Walsh, Michael Murphy, & widow Sheehan. Arround them are many other names that appear in the Bathurst area! Close by in the Townland of Ballycoghlan is an Owen McCarthy.

Following the Irish naming convention Michael's name could actualy have be James since at least three of his children named the son that should be named after their father James. Michael may have had a brother Andrew, following this covention also.

The information that I have been able to find is that Michael and Catherine Regan have a son Thomas baptized 18 Oct. 1828 at St. Famile RC church in Bathurst, New Brunswick Canada. Thomas was born June 6, In Ireland according to the Canadian records. Thomas went by John on all of the later records. His name on the 1961 census is written as John Lent McCarthy. Michael's name is written as Maitel Manoty on the baptismal record for Thom. The godparents were Jean Dempsey, and Helene Delyquin. Thomas marries Ellen Dempsey in 1851. Just prior to the entry for Thomas's baptism, there is a Ann McCarty that is the godmother to Timothy Walsh on 5 June 1828, and there is a Richard McCarthy baptized 18 Mar 1826, son of Richard McCarthy, and Catherine Dois, Richards godparents are Simon Murphy (spelled Morphy), and Anne O'Sullivan. Also baptized 19 Mar 1826 is Heleine Burke daughter of John Burke and Catherine Collins, and on 2 Nov 1827 there is baptized Thomas Hegarty to Thomas Hegarty, and Bridget Madigan, with godparents Edward Dougherty & Mary Burke. I mention these people, because they are close to the McCarthy's throughout my known information on them, both in the Bathurst area and the Houlton Maine area, so they may have come from the same area of Ireland.
In June 1833 Michael bought lot number 9 Salmon Beach (eastern part of Bathurst) at auction for 19 pounds when the previous owner's business went bankrupt. A Patrick McCarthy has a judgement made against him for failure to complete agreed upon services in the Bathurst, NB. Canada area in 1833. I wonder if this is the Patrick McCarty that shows up in New Limerick, Maine c 1847. I don't see any other mention of Patrick in the Bathurst area.
On 6 Sep 1843 Michael and Catherine has son Joseph James, and on 8 Sep 1844 Michael married Catherine Cronin (spelled Crownen/Crownen/Crouly). This makes me think that Catherine Regan likely died in child birth with James.

On Feb 2 1846 a Owen (Probably Eugene) marries Margaret Ryan and on June 1 1847 they baptize son James.

Michael died on 30 January 1860,it states at 65 years old, that would but him born 1794.

Please understand that some of the information in this file is speculation. I have tried to make it clear when I add a connection to keep a set of information because I think that it should connect, but can't prove it. I have tried to follow the record trail, and have studied all available records to do my best to make certain that the McCarthy, Hannigan, Welch, Edward, Baily ets information is as accurate as possible. The other information came from other researchers.
