Descendants of Michael McCarthy

Generation No. 1

1. MICHAEL2 MCCARTHY (?1) was born 1794 in Ireland. Msgr Kevin O'Callaghan [dkoc@iol.ie] has found in his records marriage of Michael McCarthy & Catherine Regan & Anne's baptism. I believe his parish is in Bandon, Co. Cork, Ireland, and died January 30, 1860 in Bathurst, NB Canada. He married (1) CATHERINE REGAN March 02, 1824 in Barna, Innishannon, Ireland (maybe I have found a Michael McCarthy in the 1823 Tithe record here, & Msgr Kevin O'Callaghan [dkoc@iol.ie] has found in his records this marriage date, and Anne's baptism. She was born Abt. 1800 in Ireland, and died 1843 in Salmon Beach, New Brunswick, Canada. He married (2) CATHERINE CRONIN September 08, 1844 in St. Famile Bathurst, NB Canada By A Barron Missonary to Bathurst, daughter of PATRICK CRONIN and MARY DRISCOLE. She was born December 10, 1817 in Ireland, and died September 18, 1904 in New Limerick, Maine.

Notes for M
ICHAEL MCCARTHY:
In searching the 1823 Tithe applotment records I have found in the parrish of Innishannon diocese of Cork, Co. Cork Michael McCarthy in the town land of Barna also Dennis Murphy, Thomas James, & John Butler, John Crowley & Timothy, & Michael Kelly . In Ranarouga there are Michael & Thomas Carthy, Thomas Walsh, Michael Murphy, & widow Sheehan. Arround them are many other names that appear in the Bathurst area! Close by in the Townland of Ballycoghlan is an Owen McCarthy.

Information taken from the Bathurst Church records through the LDS, Bathurst 1861 census, and specific records from St. Famile RC Church in Bathurst, NB Canada

I have marriage certificate from St. Famile RC church in Bathurst. Catherine's last name is spelled Crownen on that record.

In Michael's will he leaves one shilling each to his three sons John, Michael, and William. To his son James one shilling, and if he should return, and take care of his wife, and three young sons, he leaves him the eastern 50 acres of lot number 9 at Salmon Beach(It appeares that James did comply). Should James fail to comply, he leaves the said land to Andrew, with James having no claim to the land! To Andrew, he leaves the next adjoining 50 acres of land on the western side of that part first described. The said Andrew not to have possession of the said 50 acres, until he has reached the full age of 21, and he will remain and work at home with my other sons, until they are of age. To his youngest sons, Patrick, Florence, and Thomas, he leaves the hundred acres on the western side containing the homestead, to be divided equally, when the youngest is of the full age of 21, and they agree each, and all to support and provide for their mother, my wife as long as she remain single, and unmarried. the new barn is to be shared by all until they all share in the completion of a new barn for the ones who inherit the land that doesn't contain this barn. Michael also leaves one ox to Mary Savage. This would appear to be Mary Roach the wife of Timothy Savage b1812 Ireland. In the 1881 census they are living one house away from Andrew McCarthy in New Bandon NB Canada. This is extreemly interesting as I had origionally thought that Michael was born 1813 the son of Jeremiah McCarthy in Killarney Co. Kerry Ireland, & Jeremiah's wife was Mary Roach, but after finding Michael was supposedly 65 when he died in 1860 that seems unlikley as that puts him born 1794!

When Patrick sells his share consisting of the eastern 1/3 acre of the western 1/2 of lot number 9 To John Smith in 1872, the barn is excluded from the sale, so evidently the barn was found to be situated on that section.

I have a copy of a deed transferring the western 2/3s of the western 1/2 of lot number 9 Salmon beach containing 66 2/3 acres, and including the barn situated on the eastern 1/3 of the western 1/2 of lot number nine land currently owned and occupied by John Smith, to George Willis by Richard Smith I think date says 21 July 1884. I think it goes on to include the west fifty acres of the eastern 1/2 of lot number nine bequeathed by the late Michael McCarthy to Andrew McCarthy, which is bounded on the east by land now owned by Jasper Willis. The same land conveyed to Jasper Willis by James, and Andrew McCarthy.

By 1869 Florence is living in New Limerick, Maine, and later Catherine comes to live with him, and Thomas & Catherine's son John Sheehan by her marriage to Dennis Sheehan moves to Houlton, Maine. John Sheehan goes by Shean in Maine

Frank Thompson ftcorkmdb@aol.com has checked the records for 5 parishes just south of Cork (Passage West - Monktown, Douglas-Ballygarvan, Carrigaline-Crosshaven, Tractor Abbey & Clontead - Belgooly) he could find no information that seemed to corrispond to Michael (James), & Cath Reagan!

I have had genealogist Tomas O'Leary duchas@iol.ie search the records of the Cork area with no luck, and am currectly ($250.00 sent Nov 2003) having him research the area of Bandon/Innishannon/Kinsale to see if he can find anuthing there. No Thom wasn't able to find anything on Michael in Bandon, Ballymodan, Brinny, Courceys, Desertserges, Enneskeane, Innishannon, Kinsale, Murragh, Rathclarenor Tracton Abbey. To be honest though, I don't have as much confidence as I would like to that these records have been completly checked!

I have just heard of a genealogical project in the Skibbereen area that is working on computerizing the records for west Cork, so have written to them asking for assistance also.

Republic of Ireland letter sent 03/10/2004
Reply came 20 April 2004 from Cobh Genealogical Project. They were unable to find anything in their records which consist of Church of Ireland families for Bandon & Clonakilty.
They suggested that I try Monseigneur Kevin O' Callaghan at the Parochial House Bandon, Dan Welton Currihevern, Barryroe, Co. Cork, & Father Patrick Hickey Clogagh, Timoleague, Co. Cork. I sent them letters today 21 April 2004

June 26 2004 - I have just recieved EMAIL from Msgr Kevin O'Callaghan [dkoc@iol.ie], he has found in his records the marriage of Michael McCarthy & Catherine Regan 1824, 03, 02 & their baptism of Anne 1826, 12, 11.

ATHERINE CRONIN:
[McCarthy11012000.FTW]

For Patrick's baptism they spelled Catherine's last name Crownan.
For Florence's baptism they spelled Catherine's last name Crownin.
For Thomas's baptism they spelled Catherine's last name Crowley.

Catherine was married previously to Dennis Sheehan, and had children, Mary A 1840, Ellen J 1841, and John 1842. I Think that I may have found Mary, and Ellen in New Limerick, Maine in the 1850 census with Ebeneser C Bradbury, John is with Catherine in the 1861 Bathurst census (last name spelled shea) along with Patrick, Florence, and Thomas McCarthy.
I have found a ships passenger list for the Thetis sailed from Cork Ireland for Bathurst NB, Canada in 1837 that lists a Catherine Cronin age 20. I wonder if that is her??
