1. WILLIAM¹ HALL was born 1778 in Scotland, and died 1843 in Smith Township, Ontario, Canada. He married CHRISTIAN TAIT March 30, 1799 in Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She was born in Scotland, and died 1830.

William Hall, age 49 years, his wife, Christian Tait emigrated to Smith Township, Peterborough, Ontario with their four sons and three daughters in 1827. Originally they chose land slightly farther north than their homestead site, the south half of Lot 20, Concession 4, to which they very soon moved. They also purchased broken Lot 22, Concession 4. The first log cabin home was eventually replaced by that handsome stone dwelling on Lot 20. It is one of the many fine homes built in the area by this Master Stonemason and his sons. Mr. Hall later purchased adjoining Lot 19. His wife lived a brief three years after coming to Canada. Five years later their son, Thomas, died at the age of 22 years.

At the time of their marriage, William was a member of the 4th Regiment of the North British Militia at Dal Keith, Scotland.

William, the youngest son, did not marry. A beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, he died recently after a most successful career as a merchant in Peterborough with Robert Nicholls on the corner of Water and Simcoe streets. Two nephews, Robert and Richard Hall are employed by Nicholls and Hall and a third, Adam Hall, manages their adjoining shoe store.
