The McDonnell's originated in Ireland, a rather obvious point as far as the name goes, but my paternal great grandfather, Arthur was born in Dublin. My grandfather, also Arthur but this time Arthur James, was born in Douglas Isle of Man, and my father, yet again Arthur James, was born in Liverpool England. It does not take a great deal of imagination to determine why I was christened Arthur James. My son however was named Robert James, as I thought it was time for a change and I did not wish to continue same problem that my mother had when she called 'Arthur'. She would either get two replies or none. We also have a daughter Irene Louise. My mother's side of the family was also Irish, bearing the name O'Hara My wife, Irene Eastop's, family originated in Scotland. Her father James (Jim) was born in Glasgow, she has a brother James who has a son James, the liking for continuing the line in son's names was not unique to the McDonnell family as you can see. My wife's mother Gladys was born in the south of England (by the name of Charlton) in the Berkshire/Buckinghamshire areas) |
