What started as a Thanksgiving 1988 discussion about where The McDonough's were from, and who we descended from in Ireland, has been a slow and exciting journey. Finding my grandparent's birth certificates in my aunt's files and seeing their original immigration applications in NY's Bureau of Old Records encouraged my research. In those days before computers were prevalent, I sketched out an extended family tree, made copies of all my research, and handed everything out at a large family event. Now, the internet, my computer, and the loving gift of a genealogy program from my brother allow me to expand and explore further into history in the family tree.
Our family name of McDonough was changed from McDonagh when my grandfather came to America in the early 1900's for an unknown reason. Almost no contact with the remaining McDonagh's in Ireland has ever existed. Any assistance in researching individuals in Ireland would be appreciated. Good luck to all in your own family searches.
