Descendants of William McDormand

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 MCDORMAND was born Abt. 1710 in Scotland/Ireland/Pennsylvania, and died Abt. 1770 in Nova Scotia. He married MARY MCINTYRE Abt. 1733 in Philadelphia, PA. She was born Abt. 1710 in Scotland/Ireland/Pennsylvania, and died Unknown.

Notes for W
ILLIAM MCDORMAND:
The birth date and location of Scotland are very questionable. It is frequently reported that the McDormand's came from Scotland presumably in the late 1600's at which time they moved to the Ulster area of Ireland for a period of approximately 20 years. William "fueled by the spirit of adventure" left Ireland to locate in Chester County, Pennsylvania. This area has commonly been referred to as the Valley of the Brandywine River and is located outside present day Philadelphia. They remained in that area until 1761 at which time under the auspices of Henry Evans they emigrated Annapolis County, NS. They occupied Lot 9, originally granted to one Jacob Coupling. The lot was situated on the south side of the Annapolis River, starting at Saw Mill Creek (now Moschelle) two miles east of Annapolis Royal and ending at Spurr's Creek in Round Hill. Henry Evans acted as agent for three groups of settlers brought to Annapolis from the New England States in 1760 and 1761. They were brought on the ship the Charming Molly by Captain Grow, which made two trips in 1760 and a third in 1761. The list of passengers for the first two trips can be found in Wilson's History of Digby Co. on page 300. There were no McDormand's among them. The list of passengers for the third trip in 1761 is missing.

There is some confusion as to the first two generations. It has been reported that William McDormand & Mary McIntyre had four sons, namely William born about 1739, Robert born about 1733, James born about 1757, and Thomas born about 1762. This seems somewhat unlikely as William & Mary would have been about 47 when James was born and about 52 when Thomas was born. The second option was that William & Mary had William and Robert only (or even they were the only two of their children that emigrated with William & Mary to Nova Scotia). Robert McDormand and Mary Cormac had several children including James and Thomas. This option seems more likely in view of the birth dates.
