A generally accepted, but unproven, story is that John is from the family of William Washburn, born about 1601 in Bengeworth, England. William was a brother of John Washburn, born before July 2, 1597, and died in Bridgewater, Mass in 1670. Supposedly some of the family migrated from Massachusetts to Connecticut to Virginia.
