Haefling: Census Information: 1880 U.S. Census: James Haefling was the 19 year old son of George Haefling, a 40 year old farmer who lived in Washington Township, Adams County, Indiana. James was born in Ohio. George Haefling was born in Ohio and his parents were born in Germany. George's wife, Margaret, was a 38 year old housekeeper who was born in Pennsylvania. Margaret's father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother is listed as being in N. Quincy. Other siblings living in the household were: Peter R., age 7; Edard B., age 4; and Thomas T., age 2. Peter, Edward and Thomas were born in Indiana. This census was enumerated on June 14, 1880. U.S. Archives Call No. T-9, roll 264, Enumeration District 138, page19.

James P. Haefling, 76, auditor of the City Utilities here since 1928, died of heart disease at 1:15 a.m. today at his residence, 124 East Creighton Avenue, following an extended illness. Mr. Haefling had served with the State Board of Accounts for 10 years prior to his appointment with the City Utilities and was formerly Adams County Clerk at Decatur, where he made his home for nearly 50 years before coming here 25 years ago. He was a native of Tiffin, O. Surviving are the wife, Clara, four sons, James, William and Richard, all of this city, and Corp. Paul Haefling, now stationed at Fort Morgan, Ala.; two daughters, Miss Helen Haefling, at home, and Sister Ann de Lourdes of the Sisters of Providence at Fayetteville, N.C.; two brothers, Daniel of Lexington, Ky., and Richard, of East Fultonham, O. and seven grandchildren. The deceased was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the State Association of Certified Public Accountants. He was also a charter member of the Elks Lodge at Decatur. The body was taken to the Mungovan & Sons Mortuary where friends may call after 4 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the mortuary and 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Rt. Rev, Msgr. D. Lawrence Monahan officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The Holy Name Society will meet Sunday evening at the mortuary for recitation of the rosary.
