Vachel Clary, husband of Nancy Kilgore, has been identified as a son of William Deveron Clary by his birth record in the register of Prince George's Parish, Frederick County, Maryland; the date is the same as his tombstone. (He had a cousin also named Vachel Clary of about the same age). Vachel was probably the second "male over 16" in his father's home in the 1790 census of Frederick County. Soon afterward he and Nancy joined in the flood of migrants streaming westward. They probably trevalled via the Ohio River, on of the great migration routes used in the settlement of the West. The 1800 and 1810 censuses show Vachel and his family in Harrison County, in northern Kentucky. For a brief time, 1800-1802, the family lived across the river in Hamilton County, Ohio, then returned to Kentucky. In 1803, Lt. Vachel Clary served in the 20th Regiment of Kentucky Militia, Harrison County; he was in Harrison County for the 1810 census. By 1820 Vachel and Nancy had moved to Indiana. They lived first in Franklin County; the 1820 census showed them in Blooming Grove Township. By 1830, the family had moved to Union County, Indiana, where they were listed in the census, with sons William and John as neighbors. Vachel died in 1831; his grave is in Union County, in Dunlapsville Cemetery, near the town on Liberty. (Clary Geneaolgy--Four Early American Lines and Related Families by Rowland).
