Daniel enlisted as a soldier in May or June of 1778 at Charlestown, NH in Captain Martin's Co, Col. Peabody's Regt., NH State Troops, for seven months. He saw service at Newport RI, where the British were stationed, fought the British under General Sullivan; then went to Howland's Ferry, East Greenwich; thence to South and North Kingston to build a fort. After seven months of service he became fatigued and hired a man to take his place and returned to Springfield. In June or July of 1779, he was pressed into Capt. Thomas Sawyer's Co, Col. Barrett's Regt. and marched to Rutland where he was a scout. He was again discarged and returned to Springfield that year. In October of 1780, he reenlisted in Benjamin Cox's Co, Col. Barrett's Regt. where he did duty at Ft. Barnard--again, discharged back to Springfield. (Vermont Families in 1791, Vol 2; Genealogical Society of Vermont)

Daniel was first recorded in the grand list for 1782 where he is for the only time scribed as Daniel Hill Spencer. He removed to Hinesburg in 1788 and remained there for nine years. At that time, Daniel's name appeared back in Springfield on list of freemen for that town in 1794. Daniel and his family moved to Lower Canada around 1797, where htey stayed for seventeen years. Around 1814, they moved again to Lisbon, St. Lawrence Co, NY for three years. Daniel moved again to Upper Canada, then to New York state and then returning to Springfield. On 10 May 1841, Daniel was living with a daughter (possibly Theda) near Rochester, Monroe Co, NY. Daniel moved to Dryden, Lapeer Co, MI to live with Alma and her husband Luke Perkins by 1850.
