Notes for John Clary: The following from "Clary Genealogy Research" by Judith Clary, 929.273 A1 #7416: Our immigrant ancestor, John Clary, reached Maryland in October 1677. He was one of 39 persons transported by Captain Thomas Taylor. This entitled the captain to a large tract of land in the colony. (Patent Bk. 15, part 2:438, Hall of Records, Annapolis). Many settlers paid for their passage to America by a period of service, usually four to seven years; the employer then owed the "indentured servant" his freedom and 50 acres of land. This arrangement was often the only method whereby those who had little money could pay for the expensive voyage to the New World. In Maryland, the majority of the colonists were working people or indentured servants. Work was hard, luxuries were few, and amusements were largely homemade. The large plantation owners and other wealthy individuals lived in comfort, with slaves and other servants to perform most of the work, but these comprised only a small part of the colony's population. Another immigrant, Sarah Clary, who arrived in Maryland the 15th of April 1675 (Patent Bk 15:369) may or may not have been related to John Clary. Patrick Clarey arriving in 1676 and Latice Clerry, who arrived in 1663, are also listed in Early Settlers of Maryland. We have found no further reference to any of these in Maryland records. Little is known of John Clary in Maryland. His port of arrival must have been either St. Mary's or Annapolis--the only towns in the Colony at the time. After working several years to repay travel costs, he would then have received 50 acres of his own and engaged in framing, plus possibly some other trade. The 1706 marriage of Ann Cleary, presumed to be his daughter, is recorded in the Register of St. James Parish in Anne Arundel County.
