| This is just the beginning. WORK IN PROGRESS. CORLEY LINE: My great, great grandfather was John Purteman Corley, born 5 Oct 1834, died 1 Nov 1909 Mobile Co., AL. He married on 11 April 1853 in Mobile Co., AL to Martha Jane Kidd, born 9 May 1834, died 17 Nov 1909 Mobile Co., AL. They are both buried in Indian Springs Cemetery, Lott Rd., Eight Mile, Mobile Co., AL. Purteman and Martha Jane had 7 children: (1) Sara Jane, (2) Frances, (3) Charles Edward, (4) Mary Charlotte "Lottie", (5) Effie Almanza, (6) John Purteman and (7) Cora Lee Child #6, John Purteman Corley, was my great grandfather. He was born 26 July 1869 in Mobile Co., AL, died 2 June 1947 in Mobile Co., AL. He married 26 July 1892 in Mobile Co., AL to Lillie NMN Busby, born 8 June 1874 in Mobile Co., AL, died 16 Nov 1954 in Mobile Co., AL. They are both buried in Indian Springs Cemetery, Lott Rd., Eight Mile, Mobile Co., AL. They had 8 children: (1) John Richard, (2) Harry Malay, (3) Charles Roy, (4) Clarence Oliver "Jack", (5) Lillie Ethel (6) Edgar Earl, (7) Howard Valentine and (8) Etta Belle. The 3rd child, Charles Roy Corley, was my grandfather. He was born 1 Oct 1902 in Mobile Co., AL, died 5 Jan 1979 in Mobile Co., AL. He married on 18 Jan 1928 in Mobile Co., AL to Beulah NMN Williams, born 28 June 1905 in Mobile Co., AL, died 25 Jan 1929 Mobile Co., AL. They are both buried in Indian Springs Cemetery, Lott Rd., Eight Mile, Mobile Co., AL. Roy and Beulah had only one child, Joseph Clifton Corley, born 14 Jan 1929 in Mobile Co., AL, died 13 Sept 1999. He is buried in Indian Springs Cem. also. Cliff Corley was my father. SMITH LINE: According to the story told to me by my grandfather, Fred Smith, my great-grandmother was Laura Etta Wilkins. Etta was the mother of Fred Smith. She married a Mr. Gilbert. They had 2 sons. Fred Hamilton Gilbert was one of them. Mr. Gilbert died and Etta married 2nd to John Smith and had more children. My grandfather, Fred Gilbert and his brother, simply began calling themselves Smith instead of Gilbert, thus Fred Hamilton (Gilbert) Smith. My grandfather was Fred Hamilton (Gilbert) Smith, born 16 Nov 1894 in Stonewall, Clark Co., MS, died 10 Sept 1983 in Milton, Santa Rosa Co., FL, married to Pauline NMN Price, born 30 Jan 1896 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR, died 7 Sept 1984 in Milton, Santa Rosa Co., FL. They both were living at the home of their youngest daughter, Betty Smith Walther, at the time of their deaths. They are both buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Celeste Rd., Saraland, Mobile Co., AL Fred and Pauline had 7 children: (1) Daisy Belle, (2) Allie Mae, (3) Clifford Daniel, (4) William Lewis "Blondie", (5) Jack Donald "J.D.", (6) Arnold Douglas "Coot" and (7) Betty Lou The 7th child, Betty Lou Smith, is my mother. She married twice. Her first marriage was to Joseph Clifton Corley (see Corley Line), my father. Betty and Cliff had 4 children: (1) Joseph Lamar, (2) Glinda Yvonne, (3) Lenora Sue and (4) Julie Ann. |
