Welcome to the McFadden International Homepage. Initially the format for this page will focus on the Irish McFaddens and their history. In researching the McFadden Family in Northwest Donegal Ireland, research is handicapped by the lack of civil records before 1864.We are forced to rely on oral history. My focus is researching the following Donegal, Ireland family: Patrick C. McFadden was born on October 14, 1824. Patrick's early years were spent close to the sea and before he was 21 he became a sailor. He arrived in the USA in 1849 and married Margaret McFadden on February 9,1857 at the Church of the Nativity in New York City. A daughter, Ellen, was born to them on August 20,1860. Margaret died in childbirth about 1861. Previous to his marriage to Margaret McFadden Patrick enlisted in the US Navy aboard the USS Vandalia in the Phildelphia Navy Yard. In the Spring of 1853 the Vandalia sailed for the Western Pacific to join Commodore Matthew Perry's Pacific Squadron which sailed to Tokyo Bay, and by negotiation and treaty opened Japan to the Western Powers for commerce. The Treaty secured, the Vandalia was dispatched to Shanghai, China where Patrick was posted at the US Consulate. Patrick lived in the US Consulate for over 11 months, and although ill, survived the journey across the Pacific arriving at Kittery, Maine on October 13 1856. Patrick married again onJanuary 31, 1866 to Grace Gallagher at the Church of the Nativity, New York City. They had four children: Mary, Charles Francis,John and an unnamed child. In 1874 they moved to Canton, Fulton County, Illinois. Patrick was a sailmaker in the Navy and his skills were used in civilian life during the Civil War in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and later in the canvas and awning trade. He was highly regarded by the people of Canton and his death on February 16, 1901 was well noted in the papers of the city and county. Grace followed him in death in 1918 while living in Peoria, Illinois. I invite you to contact me with any information you could share to help shed light on the early years of Patrick and his family in Ireland and in the USA. Patrick T.
