Notes for DONALD GENE MCGOWEN JR.:
At the age of 13 Donnie was burned (30% of his body) in an accident at his fathers fishing cabin in Sargent, Texas. He was burned on his right arm, torso, neck and face. His right ear sustained severe damage which left him with only half an ear on the right side. He was transported by private car to Bay City hospital and then transferred to St. Joseph's hospital in Houston. He was later flown by a public carrier to Ann Arbor, Michigan and admitted to the University of Michigan Burn Center. Donnie was wrapped in bandages and wearing a surgical cap tilted strategically over his right ear. While waiting in the luggage area in a wheelchair a small boy walking with his mother suddenly stopped and stared at Donnie as his mother continued on her way. When the mother realized her son was not with her she returned. Donnie sat horrified as the mother grabbed the child by the arm only to have to drag him away as he refused to move. Just as the boy seemed to be stuck in place, the memory stuck with Donnie his entire life. While at the burn center his burns were kept mosist, bandages chaged twice a day after being lower into a whirlppol bath and letting them soak, and he indured many skin graphs and numerous surgery. When he was finally able to return to school nothing was ever the same. His friends were no longer, they justed seemed to have disappeared and others seemed to delight in taunting him. After moving from Michigan back to Texas kids didn't really taunt him too much you would of thought he was invisable though, for knowone made an attmpt to befriend him. No one spoke with him and he spoke very little. Donnie was distraut and let his hair grow out and never again cut it short enough to expose his ear. By the time he was 17 his hair was past his shoulders. (Late in life as he began to lose his hair Donnie began to withdraw.........)

At 17 Donnie dropped out of high school (years later obtaining his GED) and moved to Houston staying with friends of the family. He obtained a job and really began to come out of his shell. When he was 18 he severed his right hand in an on the job injury. It was reattached and many, many surgeries later he regained 30% usage but lost his pinky finger. A plastic knuckle was inserted in order to regain usage of his ring finger. Tendons were removed from his foot to use in his hand.

After the accident Donnie moved back to Rio Vista, Texas from Houston. Later, he bought a home in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas where he lived for 20 years. He is currently resides in Weatherford, Texas about 35 miles north of Cleburne.
