Remembrances of Bernard by her daughter Jean (Guthrie) Collins: She was the finest woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She was truly a person born to be the mother of children. She read a great deal and inspired that same love of books in me, helped us with homework, played games with us,just in general loved us dearly. Looking back now, I know we were poor but we had a home, food, clothes and each other. We certainly never felt poor. I was one of the four youngest children and I remember when we invited friends to a party at our house, all the friends of all four of us would come The whole community. And everyone of those kids called her Aunt Bernard. Whenever any of us had an accident ,cuts, etc. Mom took care of them herself. She never learned to drive, never held a job outside the home, but it was she who was always with us. I know now how hard it must have been for her to let us leave home just when we were getting old enough to be of any real help to her, but she insisted on the best education we could get. All five girls and the youngest boy went away to high school.
