* The Families Of Ella Mae Shelman and William D. McGinness*

Updated September 5, 2000

I am researching the family of Richard C. McGinness, who was born in Tennessee in 1852. We don't know yet who his parents were. He married 7 Feb 1875 in Nodaway County, Missouri. He lived in Nodaway County, Missouri, until 1878, when he moved to Texas. By 1880, he was back in Missouri, then moved to Thayer County, NE. After 1885, he moved to Indian Territory in Oklahoma, where he died in 1892. His wife was Rebecca Jane Harris, daughter of Wayman Harris and Nancy Weatherford. His children were Wayman McGinness, Samuel Clark McGinness, Mary Maniza McGinness, Walter Edward McGinness, Joseph Dankford McGinness, Annie Lulu McGinness, Hugh McGinness, and William Atlas McGinness.

My biggest research project is on the descendants of Jacob Bowman, born 1774 in Shenandoah County, VA, the son of Jacob Bowman and Elizabeth Keller. Jacob married Catherine Starnes in Greene County, TN, and later migrated to Fountain County, IN. They had 15 children. A lot of work has been done on this family already, but I am trying to track descendants, particularly of the children who left Indiana in the 1840's and settled in Nodaway County, Missouri. Jacob's son, Jonathan Bowman, born 1824, was my great-great-grandfather. He married Rebecca Krout in Fountain County in 1845, then moved to Missouri. When the Civil War started, he was in the Missouri State Guard under Capt. McQuaidy (McQuittie). Later his unit was absorbed by the Confederate Army and he died in 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi, leaving a wife (his second, Elizabeth, widow of John Odle or O'Dell) and seven children in Nodaway County, Missouri. Jonathan had five or six older brothers and one sister who also came to Missouri, and descendants of another sister who married William Wymore are also in Nodaway County, although they came later.

John Payton Smith was my great-great-grandfather, and is believed to have been the son of Vinson Smith, although this is not proven. John married Elizabeth Crittenden, daughter of William Crittenden who lived in Bedford County, TN. John died in 1841 in Platte County, Missouri, leaving children William Vinson Smith, James Cowell Smith, Hiram Shelby Smith, Lucretia Webster Smith, Gustavus Payton Smith, Sarah Ann Smith, Mary Ann Smith, and America Elizabeth Smith. Some of these children migrated to Nodaway County, MO, and others to San Joaquin Co, CA, in the 1850's.

Robert Noakes, born 1824 in Sussex County, England, and his wife Mary Ann Freeman, migrated to the US in 1862, settling at Albion, Edwards County, IL. Later they moved to Nodaway County, MO, and Gage County, NE.

One of my biggest dead ends is Thomas Dunk, born 1808 somewhere in England. In 1829, in Wayne County, NY, he married Mary Payne. They then moved to Edwards County, IL. I haven't found yet where in England he came from.
