Notes for J
OHN MCMILLEN:
F M Wright wrote the "McMillen-Wright Family Tree" and published it on September 01, 1941 with revisions on July 01, 1946. It is 28 pages of typed genealogy, mostly including only birth, marriage and death dates. However, the structure of families is quite complete through the publishing date. There is a one page biography on John McMillen, and on page 20, a little biography on Jane E McMillen and James Wright. From page 3 I'll paraphrase the part on John and in Jane E McMillen's "note" section include biography on her and her husband.

John McMillen was born in Ireland on August 11, 1815 and came to Eastern Canada at an early age. John was a born military man and in 1837 when the Rebellion broke out he was captain of the Volunteers. He was promoted to major and held that Office (rank ?) until his death. At age 20 he was out picking berries and met a young widow. "He picked some berries and put them in the widows pail. In return he was invited to her place the next Sunday to eat the berries. Needless to say he accepted the invitation." They were married in 1834. Henrietta had two children from her marriage with John Eaton who must have died about 1833. Together they proceeded to have 10 more children.

John and his family moved west settling in an area to be named after his wife, Harrietsville. In the 1860's it was the military center of Dorchester. In 1863 he formed the Harrietsville Militia, Company No2 of the 7th Regiment of Middlesex, which he commanded in the Fenian scare. He was a staunch Protestant and loyal Orangeman, organizing one of the first Orange Lodges in Canada. The lodge rooms were for years located over his store. In recognition of his services in the Orange Lodge he was presented with a family bible, which is now in the possession of the F M Wright.

July 25, 1998: See WFT Vol 16, Tree #2556 submitted August 28, 1997, Wright, McMillen, Beecroft. Has descendants
of McMillen-Eaton. Also, WFT Vol 17, Tree #2339, Wright, McMillen, Leigh. Many of the records incomplete.

August 30, 1998: From Mary Elizabeth Wild " ...prior to all this I did have a chance to look through all of your information. Wow, what a great job you're doing! The information that I had on your grandfather's tree was directly from Freeman's book. I have updated what I could from yours ... I appreciate you sharing your work.

Since I starting using FTM and have published what I have on my home page, I have had contact with Sarah Belle McMillen's family (she was one of William Gunning's sisters). If you're interested in this piece of the tree, I had been in contact with Kevin Nichols Kevin Nichols & Sarah Reed [nicholreed@ia4u.net] who's sister is married to one of the Billett's descendants and who had taken on this job on their behalf. I would suggest that if you're interested, you get in touch with him directly. The information I got from him was from last December and I suspect that's he's done much more since then.

I also have heard from Ed McMillen (ARCKRC469@aol.com), son of John Robert, grandson of Robert John, great-grandson of John & Henrietta.

Regardless, my tree includes any of the information that I got from Kevin and Ed. My focus is on John & Henrietta and their daughter Jane Eliza so I'm not going too far beyond the 4th generation of her siblings. I am however still interested in verifying names and dates on those generations. I am keeping the trees on my home page as updated as I can. I attended a "Wright" family picnic earlier this month and am expecting a lot of verification from the information that I passed out. Probably won't be of interest to you because it's about Freeman Wright's descendants however it will be kept up-to-date on my home page. It was great to hear from you. You're doing a great job!"
