I hope that we might increase our knowledge, and connect with other MCHALEY families, or families with a variation of the name.

Many members of my family are surprised that our MCHALEYs are not of Scotch or Irish origin. My ancestor John MCHALEY was born in Guilford County in 1784 and left North Carolina about 1811. Descendants were established in Indiana, Oregon, and California.

Henry MCHALEY left North Carolina later, and descendants are in Illinois and Kansas. George McHaley (geomch@southwind.net) has done a lot of research on Henry's line.

There is strong evidence that the original surname was of German origin. Early variations in North Carolina documents include MCHALEY, MCGALEY, MICHAELY, MICHALY, MAHALA, MAHALEY, MAHALAY, MAHALY, and MEHALEY.

Our MCHALEYs, and the MAHALEY, and MAHALA families in North Carolina are apparently related.
