Like many Canadians, my family is made up of people from all over the world. It is with pride, however, that I discovered some of my ancestors to be founding families of Manitoba or Manitou Wapah, The God That Speaks.

I began my research in 1993, hounding everyone on my mother’s side of the family for all kinds of information and taxing their patience a little too. Up until February of 2000, my focus was on the MacPhersons (my mother's maiden name). Primary surnames for the MacPherson side are: MacPherson, Smith, Kral, Turner, Martin, Tremblay and a handful of others. Because my mother’s family came to Canada in the 1900's, my reasearch hit a standstill until I could find the time to begin a letter campaign overseas.

For many years the Sandersons (my father's side) have been a mystery to me. First, for reasons beyond my control, later for lack of courage, it wasn't until my move to Winnipeg in January of 2000 that I began my search for my Manitoba ancestors.

It started with a phone call to my cousin Ruth, and the name of my Great Grandparents Robert James Sanderson and Catherine Anne Letendre. It has been an incredible and never ending journey through the past and I am grateful to those who pioneered (Family Tree Maker user Serena Willis, the Winnipeg Metis Resource Centre, Clare Letendre, to name a few)the Sanderson tree, and made my research a little easier and certainly enjoyable. My study has reunited me with my father after 23 years and him with his sister after 58 years. This past summer, my two families came together for a barbeque; some for the first time ever, others for the first time in over 20 years.

The surnames I am researching are many, however, in particular, I am looking for any and descendents and ancestors of the following: BISSARD (dit St. Germain), Isabelle (b. 1861); BUDD, Mary (b. 1830); DUMAS, Pierre (b. 1855); HUPPE, Jean (b. 1852); KRALL, Adam (b. 1873); LETENDRE, Joseph (b. 1806); MCLINTOCK, Elizabeth (b. c1860); MCPHERSON, Peter (b. 1877); PERRAULT (dit Morin), Catherine (b. 1855); SABISTON, Elizabeth (b. 1829); SANDERSON, Robert (b. 1833); SMITH, Albert (b. c1890); TURNER, Anne (b. c1892); VARGA, Anna (b. 1877).

My journey would not be possible without the love and support of my families. Their strength and courage to come together and be one family for me is greatly appreciated. I am grateful to my mother and stepfather for their support and encouragement, even when it meant opening up the past. I also thank my father and his wife, for the welcome, back into their family and to discover with me the missing links in our lives. To my cousin Ruth, I can't express enough my gratitude to you for helping me find father and introducing me to my past. Finally, to all my new relatives, I look forward to getting to know all of you, and to hear and record your stories.
