Notes for Daniel Clay McIntire:
Daniel was known as "Poppy" to his grandkids.
Daniel and Laura were married in "secret".They got married and then lived apart (Laura with her parents) until Laura's brother Jimmy (James) told their parents.Jimmy had been told of the secret marriage by their brother George who had been a witness at the ceremony.
Daniel served in World War II in the 142nd Combat Engineer Batallion (Rainbow Division).His job during the war was basically to locate and disarm booby traps, mines, etc..He received the Purple Heart and Bronze star for saving another soldier during a sniper attack.Two others had tried to save the wounded soldier only to get shot themselves.On March 7, 1945 Daniel was shot while bring the soldier back to safety.One of his friends ended up shooting the sniper that had shot Daniel and took his gun (Luger) off of him and gave it to Daniel as a souvenior.While Daniel recovered from his injuries he stayed with a German family.The lady of the house to help him recover faster made him strip nude and lay out in the sun!He was a PFC rank at the time of his discharge but had been promoted to a Sergeant on three seperate occasions.He served April 07, 1944 to January 12, 1946.
Daniel had a long and varied list of jobs including (not in order): Driving a truck for Coca Cola, working at a catfish farm, and held several positions including Supervisor at the Merced County Cemetery, where he is buried along with his wife Laura.
