Notes for E
RNEST EDWIN JACKSON:
Ernest Edwin Jackson's father Glever Dallas Jackson left him and his brother William Otis Jackson when they were very young. Glever Dallas Jackson married (2nd wife) Lora Brasher. While looking at cemeteries in Wilsonville I found many Brashers names at the Wilsonville City Cemetery. Most of Ernest Edwin Jackson's mother's side of the family (Gamel) is buried in the Sylacauga (Marble) City Cemetery. Ernest Edwin Jackson is buried beside his wife Dorothy Bates Jackson at a cemetery between Pensacola and Ft. Walton. It is closer to Pensacola. Ernest Edwin Jackson had lived the last of his life close to Holly Navarre, Florida. He died of pancreatic cancer and emphysema. He chose not to take Chemo or other treatment. Mother tended to him until his death December 26, 1981.

Daddy was an articulate person. He set type for newspapers as one of his jobs. He owned his own Sundries Shop in Opelika, AL and had also sold and swapped coins at his store. He loved to fish. He loved people. ..... Geraldine "Jerrie" Jackson McIngvale

Notes for D
OROTHY BATES:
Mama had to quit school when she was 17. She went to work at Kresses. I believe this is when her father Edward C. Bates died. Until then she had excelled in her schooling. She was on a debating team while at school. I believe had she had the chance she would have gone to college as did her brothers Evans and Edward. That not being in her life's road she worked hard at her jobs, sometimes three jobs at a time. She worked faithfully for the State of Alabama and was compensated for her years of work by being paid as a college graduate.

I cannot remember a time when mama complained about anything. At lunch when we would run by the house to eat we would have sardine sandwiches and think they were as good as steak. I remember mama eating onion sandwiches. We were poor in that Mama was the bread winner most of the time. Daddy was a dreamer. We were all charmed by him and loved him for what he was. We were lucky to be taught that we were rich in the belongings that we had. So many had so much less. I grew up thinking I was rich. It wasn't until I married I realized that our lives held so few material things. I remember playing with a tin can and a stick, putting dirt and water in it and playing like I was churning butter. I remember mama making little dresses for my sister's worn out dolls from old sheets, putting lace on the hems and giving them to a poorer family for Christmas. I remember Daddy buying a second hand bike and painting it for me for Christmas. I pray that my children will have fond memories of us after we are gone.

I remember moving to Sylacauga from Montgomery into a house that was "family" house on Hay Hill which is now named (by my father) Buena Vista Drive. The house was a "dog trot" house and daddy remodeled it. He had our Preacher from Brown's Chappel Church come and do the concrete/brick work on the front porch. That porch got screened in. My sister and I use to skate around and around on that porch. It was small but we made do. Before we got the house there were roses growing beside the road along the mail boxes. When in Sylacauga, AL, Mama went to work for Foremost Dairies. She taught herself through self study to microscopically analyze milk and cattle blood. When University of Auburn, AL had exams for qualified Technician, she took exam for tech 3, and was given a job as a tech 1, higher grade because of her expert scores.

Mama had dark brown hair and brown eyes. She was a beautiful woman. Her best friends were a Mrs. Lingo and a Beth Blackmon in Montgomery, AL. At one time Daddy worked at the Montgomery Advertiser Newspaper. Another time he worked at the newspaper in Opelika in Advertising. He set type at one time. He worked at the Maytag store in Sylacauga. Before I was born he and his brother William Otis Jackson worked at a mattress company in Sylacauga I was told was owned by his mother Ada Josephine Gamel Jackson.

In looking back at a photo album prepared for my mama by my grandmama Bates I offer the following information:
Dorothy Bates, May 12, 1913, Monday, at 7 a.m., in Dallas, Texas, at Baptist Sanitarium.
Billy Barnett was the first little boy to see her and Christine Hochtkiss the first girl. Miss Edna Ball gave her the first present a beautiful little comb and brush and her mother Mrs. J. H. Ball sent her the first flowers. Miss Welch was the first nurse and Dr. Embru the Doctor. There is a card in the photograph album that says in script Miss "Hela Temple" Bates, from Mrs. J. H. Ball. Engraved on the card is Southern Securities Company, Stocks, Bonds, Loan, 605 Southwestern Life Bldg, Dallas, Texas. In script is written McKinney Texas, May 12, 13. One one page is a photo of Dorothy and Dayy, Langdeau Place, Dallas.
May 12, 1914
Dorothy was 1 year old. Ella cooked a little birthday cake and put one candle on it. Papa was out of town so mother took her to the baby show. She registered "A perfect baby." Mother gave her, her first pair of shoes today. Christine H. gave her silk hose, Mr. Webb gave her gold pins with "Dorothy" ingraved in them. Talton Turrentull gave her a nice big doll. Her birthday was spent very pleasantly considering her dear sweet papa was away. She misses him and cries for him each day.

Photos....These pictures were taken at the Hook's House in Paris. Dorothy was 13 months old. she could walk when she was one year old.
July 18, 1914
"After spending 3 mo. in Paris, we left for Palacios, a small town on Matagorda Bay to spend the remainder of summer. Dorothy was 14 mo. old. She took her first boat ride from Palacios to Port Lavaca (30 miles). During her visit here she saw her Grandpa Evans, Grandma Evans, Aunt Beulah and Maggie. Dorothy loves to go in bathing. She loves to be "ducked under". She made some nice friends here among them were: John E. Regan, Harry & Elizabeth Scisson, Ruth Honnely and Grandpa Hausel.

Newspaper clipping: " In Sympathy, We greatly regret hearing that the father of Miss Dorothy Bates, who attended school here in 1927-28, has passed away at their home in Montgomery, Ala. We, the Seniors have a deeper feeling of sympathy for her than any other class, perhaps because she was a member of our class when were Sophomores and has also had another great misfortune in not being able to attend school since she left Fort Pierce. Dorothy was very active in all school activities, being a member of the debating team, which went to Gainsville winning second honors in the State contest. Dorothy was highly esteemed by every member of the school. She had high ideals and a fine character, which is a credit to any home or school. We have missed her here and only regret the loss of such students."
